  • What size tyres?

We have recently purchased the 150VX with factory Grandtreks 265x60x18. We have just swapped the camper trailer and are now running 265x70x17. Tyre shops have totally confused me about what I should be doing. My idea is to get a set of 17 inch rims for the car for offroad but which tyre?
I was thinking of changing the prado tyres to the same as the camper but have been told this will affect the economy, braking and towing ability. Is this correct or will it be ok. It seems that a hell of a lot of people are runming with these tyres. My other option is to change the tyres on both the car and the camper to 265x65x17. Any opinions would be great. Also any advice on which tyre would also help.

    Cheers
    Dinah

All changes you do to your vehicle will effect economy, braking and towing ability. Chuck a steel bar, big heavy tyres and a lift and you fuel rate per hundred heads north a liter or two per hundred but ti's the thing to do to get to the places that other people are not at.

What I would do is match wheels and tyres all round, especially if you are looking at heading to a remote location since then you have reduncancy with your tyres. To hell with economy. If that is the issue then you just wouldn't go on a driving holiday. I run 265 70 17s. What you do is up to you but consider where you are going and what you plan on doing. Tyre manufactures are increasing the range of 65 profile tyres in the off road market. I do not believe there is a mud tyre that is 265/65 but there are a few ATs now. I would still go with a 70 profile as it gives you more side wall for bagging out when you deflate your tyres and give everything a little more gound clearance.

I run two sets, the 265/60R18s around town and the 265/70R17s on CSA explorers (no longer made) for bush trips. I do notice slightly more sluggish braking, acceleration and handling from the taller tyres and fuel economy goes up about 1 litre/100km. The tyres are ST-Cs which are quite aggressive and this would exagerate the characteristics listed when compared to a more conventional AT. When I switch back to the road tyres the truck feels a lot more responsive.

When I purchased them, there was no AT tyres available in LT construction for the 265/65R17 size, so the only way to get LT was to move up. Nowadays Bridgestone have their duellers available in the factory size and LT construction and other manufacturers are following suit. Even with the above compromises I still would move up a size for extra clearance and flotation. Its only another 13mm but it all counts!

If you go offroad then my vote is to get a set of 265/70s for the car and get a compressor/rattle gun or shentai impact wrench for quick changes. It takes me 20-25 minutes to change mine over.

Hi Dinkydi, I have a 2011VX TD and have done the same as Schniff. Two sets - original 18'' for around town and 265/70/17 Goodyear MTR kevlars on 17'' Speedywheel Avalanche for offroad. The 17'' is better for your off road footprint when you deflate. Advice to me from the dealer (load rating, calipers etc) was the only suitable wheel in 17'' for the 2011 VX was the avalanche. There are a few more tyre options open to you on a 17'' wheel compared to 18''. It is a good idea to have the same sizes all round should you need to swap around when you are away, I went for the Kevlars purely for their strength - they are a little pricey though. All the best. Some pics below.

Have to wait till end of july at this stage before I can get any. Ive found it very hard to find a 17' rims to fit a 150 correctly and with a look im happy with.

CC - The Speedywheel Avalanche has a bore of 106mm - but they have hubcentric spacers attached - I think the actual bore is 110.? to suit the Prado ( I removed these spacers so it could fit) - also the Avalanche will give you the same tracking with +25, the hammer has +30.

Hope this helps, let me know what you decide. All the best Keeper.

Kakadaz, I will give you an update next Tuesday. I will be doing some sand driving when I head out camping down the Hale River (Ruby Gap NT) this weekend. It will be a good test as I will be towing an Aussie Swag behind as well.

Update as promised - Tyres were great in the sand - no problems - and a great test towing the heavy trailer. Suprisingly no bogging, which is unlike me. I didn't go to Ruby (road still closed from the rain) so went into Ellery Creek on the Western Macs.
