  • Winter Diesel

    Hi All

Has anyone had issues with not having winter diesel yet? My GX Wont start first thing and my advice so far has been that I have summer fuel still in the tank and that once I get winter fuel all will be sorted....

It just wont start first thing but later in the day fires pretty much first time. I have replace glow plugs about 2 months ago and only have had starting issues in the last week? Wondering if I have dodgy glow plugs??

    Any advice/opinions appreciated.

    Cheers
    Nigel

Could be possible. When was the last time you filled up? Must be pretty cold up your way that your fuel is waxing.

This is normally only an issue in the alpine country where it gets extremely cold. I've got diesels that use regular diesel all year 'round and even after a heavy frost they start fine. I know it can get pretty fresh in Bathurst this time of year though. As has been said, the diesel shouldn't wax up unless you're in significant minus conditions for an extended period of time.

Have you changed fuel filters and dewatered lately?

I had my 2008 GXL at Perisher last year, parked for two days at the carpark at the Ski tube.
Jumped in at about 6am the day we were leaving, temp was reading -8, started first go...
        Damn cold too...

Plus one for Offroader's comment above...

What brand of glow plugs? You didn't get those el-cheapo ones that are always on Ebay lately? VSP brand?.... they are crap, heard of heaps of people having trouble with them.

              Arrgguuhh cars!!!

I have been using a slight squirt of "Start Ya Bastard" to get it going first start in the sub zero conditions and thinking I might need to a better brand of glow plugs and then it started relatively fine this morning....mind you it was a couple of cegrees above zero this morning.

              Cheers

It was -10 one time I was fishing at Lake Eucumbene (north of Cooma) and the Prado started no problems at all. I'd check your glow plugs mate.

Yeah it did Derb, it only needed the smallest of small squirts and it would jump into life

You could try pouring hot water over the fuel filter, this is where "waxing" occurs in very cold temps.

Or light a fire under the sump like the Germans did to their Tiger tanks in WW2 during the freezing winters.

Seems there's two types of diesel for the cold conditions - Highland Diesel and Winter Diesel - the former has about 20% kero (aka heating oil) and the latter has 40% of the same. That's my understanding anyway.

Not many places sell the stuff, so if you plan on going to the snow areas, best to ring around the fuel places near the base of the mountain to ask what stuff they sell.
