  • Suspension Advice GXL 90

I've read through the suspension threads and I'm not sure that they answer a query I have. My stock standard Jan 99 GXL Prado has only done 125k and is in pretty good nick. The suspension, however, is getting a little shaky and seems to be in need of an overhaul. The vehicle has had a pretty easy life but did the Gibb River Rd a few years ago and got knocked around a bit on that.

Does anyone think that I should just replace worn parts from Toyota or perhaps a total replacement from an after market supplier? I also drag a trailer around with a couple of dirt bikes on it and that might alter your thinking.

I intend keeping the car for a few more years and I get up to the Flinders a few times a year so any help you can offer will be appreciated.

I think you'd be crazy to go to the effort of overhauling your suspension with toyota parts. I'm planning on getting an Old Man Emu suspension system with 2" of lift. OME also make kits with standard height which would would be a much better option than a standard toyota system.

    My 2c.

Ditto. Aftermarket for sure. It's probably cheaper and will give you some extra ground clearance. Just keep clear of heavy duty springs unless you really want it lifted, or are constantly carrying heavy loads.

Okay, so something like OME replacement - I'm not that interested in any lift and will take advice about holding up the back with the trailer/bikes on. cheers guys.

The price for std height springs/shocks are the same as a 2" lift spring/shock, Aftermarket is alot cheaper than Toyota, I would recommend EFS as the springs are matched to the shocks so that you get a nice ride, and go for the 2" lift, you might think you dont need it now, but a few trips out with some mates will make you change your way of thinking.

Thanks for responding crooza, I really don't need the lift. My 4WD's don't get used properly as a rule, and this one's only got a couple or so years left with me. Most of my hard off road fun is done on dirt bikes. The standard set up has been great for me until now and I just want to bring it back to those specs and not lose the comfort of bitumen driving as well, which I do a fair bit of. The other thing is that my trailers are all balanced and level behind the Prado, wouldn't want to upset that either. I've read a bit about the EFS gear and it sounds good. I'm in SA so I might drop in on them at Edwardstown and chew the fat.
            cheers.

When you fit the std height springs, you still may find that the vehicle will be raised, as the old springs would have sagged a bit, but this will only be to just over the original height, the new springs will then settle over a month or two, and go back to original manufacture height.

Yeah, same thing happens with the bikes, they have the advantage of being able to adjust those settings though! Thanks for your help.

                  Hello All

I went through the whole thread and tried to understand whether it answers my question

                  my situation is

i have upgraded to a 2 inch lift with ARB EMU lft kit

before i could do it..... the ARB staff did ask me all the questions whether i would be carrying some load all the time or would i be using it as a day to day vehicle and an occasional offroader

i cleared my point that i do offraod not that often .he then advised to go for EMU light shocks and struts

once installed the prado runs ok but i can hear a loud thump form the rear shocks when the prado is empty especially on patchy roads and concrete patches .

i went back to ARB..... he advised .......... its because the shocks are hard and when the vehicle has some weight it would not happen

but now even when i have 3 people sitting on the back seat the noise doesn't go away and is getting me worried and annoying

                  Please advise

                    Hi,

They are new so perhaps it might take a bit of time for them to soften up

I never heard any strange thumps after having my light/medium EMU's installed by ARB. In fact the ride was great. I'd get underneath and check for loose bits (aggresively shake the vehicle if necessary).

                          Thank you for the reply

I have spoken to ARB this morning and they have asked me to bring my truck over so that they can put it on the hoist and check .............is there anything specific that i should ask them to look at ?

Hello All had been to ARB and they finally they figured out that it was the Tow BAr that was creating that thumping noise .......for the time being have removed the tow bar and the noise has disappeared

haha, it's great when it's something so simple!
I had a knocking noise for weeks, couldn't trace it, and it drove me mad... Eventually found the rear panhard rod was a smidge loose, easy fix.
