  • Speedometer not working

    Hi guys,
Can someone advise me whether there is an easy fix for my problem before I take it into a Toyota dealer and get charged big bucks. While doing some fairly heavy 4WDing over Easter my speedometer stopped working and also the cruise control (I assume due to the faulty speedometer?).
Is the speedometer on the KDJ120R diesel an electrical sensor attached somewhere to the transmission? Could it be a simple case of me having pulverized a sensor or pulled a lead off it? If so can anyone tell me where to check on my 120 series? Is there somewhere in Perth you can get a workshop manual of the 120 Prado diesel to show all this stuff (the glovebox manuals of course are useless in this department)?
Many thanks if anyone can help.
    Regards
    Bryan

Might be worth checking fuses. Were you towing a trailer? On my old 100 series my mates boat trailer would blow fuses on the reverse light and speedo every time I put it in reverse ----!!!!! something to do with the way it was wired up ?

      Hi Doc,
Yeah, I looked for a fuse but couldn't see one anywhere either in the engine bay or under the steering column. No I wasn't towing a trailer at the time though my 19 year old son was driving so I blame him!

At one stage my speedometer kind of packed up completely one trip - i.e. it suddenly gave no response regardless of travel speed. I figured it was a fuse, so I stopped the car and had a look at the fuses but found no problem there. The problem persisted for a day or two and then suddenly the speedo just sprung back to life again.

All was normal again, or so I thought... 6 months later, the speed is now suddenly over-reading heavily... (i.e. 100km/h on speedo is only 88km/h on GPS) I have 4 new 265/65R17tyres, so no problem there.

Do I need to replace the speedo or is it something else?

If you have ABS, the speed signal is from the ABS sensors. Vehicles without ABS have a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) at the rear of the gearbox.

Techstream can check your ABS system. Sensors and wires are on each front wheel.

Could someone explain if there is a specific wheel sensor that would be the culprit or is it a case of having to replace all 4 sensors? Can anyone with a spanner replace it/them or does it have to be a qualified technician ie: for the purposes of having to reset the computer?

I was quoted 1200 dollers for 4 speed sensors, can anyone advise if i need to do all 4? Is there one particular wheel that goes out first?

Check out the "Speedometer Driven Gear" icon. It shows the electrical pulse sender and a gear which site inside the transfer case, I presume... Anyway you can look for a cable around your transfer case.

Thanks vf34, i see the part and believe i found it on my car.
I googled the part to try find a part number (SPS 013), however this part is a two pin right angled socket!
This does not look like the part in the links schematics...

I rang the chap from auto barn who clarified the part number as stated above which now makes me think im looking at the wrong thing.
Im no mechanic but of a mechanical mind, can someone just point me to the right part (diagram would be nice) as the workshop manual does not help... grr (stupid $50).

                          Cheers in advance!
