  • water temperature gauge

I bought a second hand Prado 120 TD, year 12.2003. When I am driving the temp gauge needle is just under half
(under the little temp sign on the gauge). Unfortunately there are no numbers on toyo gauges. Can anyone tell me from experience what the real temperature is and what the gauge should show at normal highway driving with low 20 outside temperature.

My temp gauge reads just under half all the time (Once warmed up). I have the v6.

    Can't tell you actual temp.
2004 GXL V6 and loving it.

Ditto, my temp gauge reads the same as both of yours and drops lower on really cold nights. Mmmm don't those Turbo Diesels love the colder weather !

Normal operating water temperature is 88 C - just below halfway on the temp gauge. This is what my Scanguage II shows. It does fluctuate 2 degrees either way depending on outside conditions and how hard the vehicle is being driven but always returns to 88 C. I would imagine the diesel would be similar.

Hey Offroader, you mention that you have a scanguageII and in your signature you have a 2004 GXL V6. I thought that the scanguage was only supported on 2005 and up (according to their website)

The Scanguage website is not entirely accurate in terms of fitment. Late month 2004 V6's with the 5 speed auto are OBD compatible. It depends in which month your 2004 was manufactured.

I think mine is a 06/04 and the auto is probably 4 speed as the selector goes from Drive to 3 (not 4). I'll have to check when I get home...
              thanks..

Temp in our 02 never changes, regardless of the heat or towing its performing, amazing how the Japanese have perfected temperature. My old mustang has a radiator thats huge by comparison, oil & transmission coolers, electric fan & with luck will run at 200f (93c) but it is a 7 litre. (429ci)

The actual temperature needs to move by 12 degrees before the needle on the gauge will move at all, its not that the engine temp doesn't vary its just that the gauge has been dulled so it seems that way.

Last year towing the CT up the Bloomfield track in 35 degrees my scangauge got to 95 degrees but the needle hadn't moved. Usually scangauge reads 88-90 degrees.

                  Cheers Andrew

Mine sits on around 86. When I recently pushed it along a soft beach in high range and tyres at 18psi it got to 93. I did the run again in low range and the temp sat on 86. Goes to show how efficient the cooling system is as long as you don't overload it.

Im in Qld, via Torque app, mine reads 90-93 standard.
I've seen 106c towing up hill.
The dash gauge goes only from just below half to a tad over- maybe at top of the little temp marker.
                      is this ok,?
                      Its a 2003 4 spd Auto grande.
