  • New Scangauge x4.02 supplied AMPLE OUTDOORS LITHGOW

    Hi all,

Just received my new Scangauge v4.02 from Matthew at Ample Outdoors in Lithgow (www.ample-outdoors.com.au).

The unit is well made, per my last scangauge unit. I have used these units in my Hilux 2.7 petrol ute, my 4.0 V6 Prado and also in my 3.0 Turbo diesel 2003 Rodeo ute. I have found them to be brilliant and would recommend them to anyone who is a motoring enthusiast. I really appreciate the accuracy of the unit (after a few tanks of fuel to learn the parameters), as the Rodeo had the normal useless fuel gauge that never reads correctly and the Hilux had a 140 litre long range fuel tank fitted, so the Hilux fuel gauge struggled to read correctly.

Here is the SG2 unit as supplied by Ample Outdoors, ready to plug in and play..

The unit is very basic to fit up, especially in a 120 Prado. I just dropped the panel below the steering column, plugged the big connector straight into the OBDII port and cable tied the excess cable up so it wouldn't wander about. I then refitted the panel and used the Velcro sticky strips to fit the gauge on my steering column, allowing enough cable to adjust the steering column up and down.

The clarity of the LCD screen has been improved in my opinion. I found it easier to read with the sun coming in from behind me. Also while setting the basic options on the unit I was very happy to see the changes in the layout of the settings screens. Here is an example of one on the setting screens.

The new soft ware now has X-gauge features that read engine horsepower, transmission temps and a really handy looking cost per kilometer gauge. As I have some more time I will program the X-gauges into the unit and add a write up here on each different function, with my opinion of the 'extras'.

Hope this is interesting for you.....

    Cheers,

Great write up so far Matt. I know it is early days but do you know if the horsepower function can be displayed a kW and is it progressive ie dependant on speed and throttle position. Also with transmission temp can this as well as the HP be displayed on one of the 4 corner displays.

I've already got a Scanguage II - purchased in 2008. So what is the difference with this one? Looks identical.

Complete agree. There are other alternatives (can't recall the name) but where around $500 so couldn't justify the cost.

What firmware changes have there been?

Versions 3.0 to 3.14 - Base ScanGauge features were in place, minor technical changes were made to prepare for X-Gauge release.

                Version 3.15 - (2007) X-Gauge functionality added.

Version 3.16 - (~2009) AVG and TFC X-Gauges included in firmware.

Version 3.17 - (2009) Minor bugfix release for the Gallons/Litres to Empty X-Gauge, sometimes the word Gallons or Litres would flash across the Gauge screen on some vehicles.

Version 3.17mb - (05/2010) Minor bugfix release for some vehicles that use the KWPF protocol (particularly vehicles that used a Mercedes Benz engine) Fixes a timing issue that prevented the SGII connecting to some KWPF vehicles.

Version 4.02 - (04/2011) Major release. Changes to menu system and setup options. Turbo Boost gauge, Transmission Fluid Temperature gauge and Horsepower gauge added as standard gauges. Performance Monitor added - record and playback performance runs. Revisions to Trouble Code clearing protocols. Many other tweaks and tuning options.

OKAY - so how do you update the 'firmware' on an existing Scanguage II???

                          Paul,

I bought one a couple of weeks back. Transmission temp doesn't work AFAIK. Not a std gauge anyway. Ample Outdoors website says they are developing it.

Thanks for the info Ron. I have a 3.17mb. If the 4.2 version can not monitor auto transmission temperature I will wait until Ample Outdoors sort out their firmware upgrade for $50.00

Matt I just wanteds to confirm you are using it on 2004 petrol. Scangauge says it wont work until mid 2005 model. I have a late 2004 build VX petrol which works well with Garmin Ecoroute HD so am think it will be ok. Should I risk a purchase without further confirmation.
