  • Dobinsons vs Lovells kit

G'day everyone im new here as well as to the 4wd scene. After reading though countless forums i've finally narrowed my choice of lift kit down to lovells or dobinsons and was wondering which is a safer bet

    Cheers

The safer bet is to forget those two brands and use EFS, the shocks and springs are matched to each other, so that you get a nice ride, and plenty of wheel travel when off road.
I found out one thing this past weekend, and that is with the EFS kit I have more front end travel that a Landrover Discovery 2.

      Hi Firey,

I'm running the Lovells Springs and shocks and have had no issues with them at all. I cannot comment of the Dobinsons as I haven't used them personally.
I know of several other PradoPoint members who have Lovells and to the best of my knowledge are happy with them as well.
As too EFS being a safer bet again I haven't used them but I believe Lovells springs and shocks just might be a matched set.

We have used OME for years with no problems and the advantage I see is if you ever need warranty they have the largest Australia wide network.

Unfortunately they are not, the only brands on the market where the shock is matched to the spring rate correctly, are EFS and OME. All other brands buy in shocks from one manufacturer and the springs in from another. TJM make the XGS and they are another brand that has nearly got it right, they actually use king springs and a Cofap shock.
But back to EFS, they not only bench test the suspension set up, they spend countless months in the outback (true Australian conditions) testing different valve settings, spring rates ect. So you know that the shock will perform in our conditions, and they give you the best warranties in the business, 3 yrs or 100000 k's.

We have OME, cant fault the quality 80km on the shocks, had them checked by ARB recently before a hard trip & they are fine BUT next time I would choose the softer spring, (medium in back) ours is quite harsh on the ride.

I have a 2 inch Lovells kit (shocks & springs) and got the kit at a great price ($650 all up). So far so good with no complaints. I have the extra heavy duty coils up front and medium coils in the rear and it rides great. I will be looking at air baging the rear soon for when we go camping.

I dont have to do that with my EFS, I have even towed one famous 40 series on a car trailer and the vehicle sat flat, and without a load, the suspension is still soft and comfy.
You only get what you pay for, now you having to pay extra to make the kit work correctly.

Sorry Luxxxy, but I can't believe people are still doing this, if you buy the correct gear in the first place, you will not have any problems down the track, and in the end it will cost you less, but we all learn in the end.

No need to apologise mate. Thanks for the input but horses for courses.

IMO I have bought the correct gear. I don't tow vehicles or trailers and I don't have drawers and a fridge in the back so I don't need heavy duty coils in the rear. We go camping for 2 -3 days about 12 times a year. That equals around 36 days which is when we would need to use the bags. For the other 329 days of the year the prado is our daily driver with nothing in the back.

I would rather have a comfy, nice riding vehicle for the 329 days then when we do go camping, pump up the bags and still have a comfy, nice riding vehicle.

Air bags aren't that expensive and when considering what I paid for the Lovells kit, i don't mind forking out for a good set of bags.
                      Cheers Skye

                        Hi Folks

I agree with Luxxy, I have gone with the OME setup to suit the front end weight of steel bar, dual batteries, compressor, no winch. Rear is set up with the medium springs as I have drawers with recovery gear and fridge in most of the time. When we go camping we take the same gear whether it be a weekend or our annual trips of four weeks plus.

So we have Firestone Airbags and run 5 lbs normal and 17lbs loaded for camping the ride and handling is the same with this set up, it can't possibly be the same if you use springs that are then compressed with the extra weight of your gear when touring. I have had 4WD's for 25 years and had all types of setups and this is the best yet.

                        Regards, Richo.
