    Hi guys, new to this forum been wathcing for ages but first post and not the best first post topic, we have owned our 2004 120 prado for about 6 months now and love it to pieces, but have noticed a buring oily smell and now is using a lot more fuel than it did , just the 2 of us on highway driving mostly, getting 600 to a 90 tank at approx 16.5l per 100, not good as im seeing you guys getting like 10s and 11s, i figure that smell is burning disiel ,not oil it doest use any oil.
    Any help of what i can check or a number i can ring ,

      Where about's are you located?
      It is a little high, but I am sure you'll find the 10's and 11's are from the newer engine, the TD4.
      Do you get it serviced regularly?
      The smell could be coming through a hole in the exhaust, but still worth looking into...

        Thanks for the reply mate im located in eltham , vic. the 10's prob are from the td4s, the motor has only done 115,000 and thats not high in my book it has been serviced every 10,000 through toyota.
        getting 16s isnt sitting right with me thats all. i was thinking of cleaning the throttle bodie , but cant see that making a massive massive diffrence

          Hi

          16's seems way too high. I have the 1kz auto 2005 model and standard as it was getting around the 12.5's around town with some 80k running. So yours is way off.
          (though I thought 600ks to 90 litres is 15.15 lphk. ........ 600/90=6.6. 100/6.6=15.15lphk)

          I now have a dtronic chip and run 265/70 tyres and the average is now 11.9.

          If its using more fuel then I would suggest your injectors may need reconditioning.

          But first park the car on a clean area and leave it running for 10mins and see if you are losing any diesel from a line or the pump. Put some butchers paper down with rocks on it so it will show up easily. If thats not the case and

          you are handy with a spanner (or prepared to have a go) i would suggest the following;

          Do the manifold clean and blank off the EGR valve as detailed here;

          While you are at it pull the injectors and glow plugs and take them to a diesel place and have them crack pressure tested. If one is out (probably will be) then swap them for some reconditioned ones.

          Refit everything and change the fuel filters and see how that goes.

          The other thing is how do you drive it. If your foot is always pushing through the firewall you will use more.

            I get get 12 -14 l/100 on my 1KZ when not towing. 90l gives 600km... 1200km on a full tank, not too unusual if you are pushing it.

              mines got lift, 70 series tyres, roof basket and heaps of weight in the back and i drive it normal ie keep up with traffic (try to) and i have 50/50 hwy urban and i get constant 1250 ish out of a tank, so somethings not right. cheers samo

                From what I read, cleaning the throttle body and checking the glow plugs would my first port of call. As Tassie Tiger says, if you knwo how to swing a spanner, have a read through the thread and give it a go yourself..

                    Thanks heaps guys for all the replys,
                    Will do the manifold and throttle body clean saturday if i cant get to it earlier, any idea of a price for changover injectors or new ones, cheers, will organize parts tomorrow, and post pics as i go along.
