  • Unleaded - Ouch please help

This bloke I know (OK it was me but I'm embarrassed) just put 145 litres of unleaded in his 2006 diesel prado (not the common rail). Being the longest weekend of the year I thought I would have a go at fixing it. Any tips fellas. Background - filled her up and drove about 5k's. Noticed at a set of lights that I had lost power. Pulled over, nearly vomited when I realised I had topped up with unleaded, and then had the car taken home on flat top. Thinking of draining tanks, flushing lines, cracking injects and primining with diesel. Anyone been there? Anyone need 160 litres of 1:7 unleaded:diesel mix??

    Bad luck mate.

If you had filled it and NOT driven it, your idea would be okay (flush it and drain tanks). In my honest opinion I would leave it until next week and flat tray it to Toyota.

They will do the same as you planning and maybe pull the
Injectors to check none are seized up. The engine oil and filter should be changed also.

PM damonat for his opinion, he is Toyota mechanic.

Fuel filter has to be replaced also. I agree, its something if you should consider getting done by a qualified workshop.

Thats all I would be doing. If its damaged its damaged and you are doing what they would be doing anyway, only charging for it.

I think you will find it will be fine.

          The 1kz is pretty robust.

          good luck.

            I agree with TT.

Been there, done that (missus, not me).

Drain the tanks, bleed it to the injector pump (you will smell the difference between the unleaded/diesel), start it and forget about it. No problems. Whip on a new fuel filter if you're realy worried.

            My opinion,

                you are correct.
drain the tank. have a jery can and pour it down once tanks are empty, and drain that out (flush any ULP still in tanks).
put deisel in tanks (about 40-50lts) and flush lines up to fuel filter.
you will have to change fuel filter.
now crack the injector lines and prime these to deisel.
common error to fill with ULP.
you would be surprised. all good. it will be ok

Just as an aside when I was an apprentice we had a series something landrover with a something diesel in it (perkins maybe). Anyways, we always added about 10l of petrol to the tank whenever we filled it up thinking it would go faster. Never hurt it :0 but did seem to go a bit faster. I think we could get it up to about 50mph sometimes.

My missus drove it till it stopped - about 3-4km from the servo. I got there and switched to the tank that still had diesel in it (she only filled 1 with unleaded). Pulled the fuel feed line off the injector pump and used the hand pump to push the unleaded out the line until I got diesel up. Put the line back on, cranked it over and started. Little bit of smoke for 5 seconds and all good after that. Later that week I drained the unleaded out of whichever tank it was she filled.

Changed the fuel filter next service...... That was probably 2.5 years ago and no problems since then.

As Damonat stated its a common thing to happen. I have done heaps of roadside rescues.

OK guys - thought I would close this thread off with end result in case anyone has similar problems in future. I was away with work for a week so I had to leave truck with wife who organised my local mechanic to help out (still getting heaps of grief from first wife over how I could have made mistake in first place). Local shop drained the fuel (had to remove one tank), purged, replaced filters, filled with diesel and all good. About $300 - so I got out lightly. Its actually running better than ever now ;-) Thanks for all the assistance and replies.
