  • programming a key

Hi guys , has anybody programed their own key ?
Could you tell me if these steps work ?
blank Toyota transponder key. You can do this from the dealership, a locksmith, or an online source such as eBay. Once you have the key, take the blank key and the master key to a locksmith that he or she can duplicate the key. This will be much cheaper than the dealership.
    2
Now that you have the newly cut key and the master key, you can program the Toyota transponder key. Sit in the driver's side of the Toyota vehicle. Press and release the brake and gas pedal simultaneously.
    3
Insert the master transponder key. Do not turn it. Push and release the gas pedal 5 times within at least 15 seconds of inserting the master key.
    4
Press and release the brake pedal 6 times within 20 seconds of completing step 3, then remove the master transponder key.
    5
Insert the newly cut transponder key into the ignition, but do not turn. Press the gas pedal once.
    6
Wait up to 2 minutes or whenever the security light on the dashboard turns off. Once the light goes off, remove the new transponder key and press the brake pedal once. The new transponder key should now be programmed. Test the key by attempting to start the engine. If the engine does not start, repeat the steps above.

    Re: programming a key

    Hi Mardeb,

I shall try this in the next day or so and report back to you. Hopefully it is successful and my key will also be programmed.

    Regards Pete

I just tried it twice, and it did not work for me.
My key transponder is already programmed to unloclk/lock car, but dammed if I can get it to start the car. I was hoping these were the missing steps that I needed.

My Prado is a manual, if that makes any difference. The two peddal dance described above may be for the automatics out there.

Im not sure whether the instructions are for the remote opening closing or for the transponder code for starting the car?
Mr Minite can cut me a second key with transponder and code it to start the car (as long as I have the original) for $150 but they can not do the remote lock/unlock part.
A friend has posted me a spare key he had from his ex Prado and I will try and give it a go when it arrives.

Marc, the remote lock/unlock part is easy. It involves opening/closing the drivers door a few times, and inserting keys and turning ignition on etc. I did it a couple of months ago, and it works. I just can't get the key to start ignition, which I hoped these recent instructions psoted above would do, but that didn't work.
I have the remote programming instructions at home on my PC if you would like them.

PM sent, with link to manual. I can only host it for a couple of days, as the site is not mine. I only do the maintenence on it, so you need to print it off quickly before I take it down.

The new key arrived today in the mail.
Im not sure if Im game to try the programming now?
                    Could I wreck it?

Toyota quoted me $45 and 1 hour to cut and code since I had a new unprogramed key and that seemed to make the difference to them!

I've programmed a key and i don't think there is any way you could wreck it. If there were I surely would have done so .

It will be a lot easier if you have someone to read the instructions whilst another performs them. There are a few tight timing constraints, which if you miss, will require you to start the programming over again. Not a big deal but becomes tiresome if you miss it a couple of times.

                      Good luck.

For $45.00, I think you are best off to get your dealer to do it. As posted previously, I have not had any luck in getting the key to start the vehicle, and have tried several times to program the key based on the toyota instructions. The key will now lock/unlock the vehicle, but starting is another issue.

                          I tend to agree.
For $45, let them do it and its all sorted!
Otherwise I may mess it up!!!
Ill see if can have it done this week and let you know hoe it goes.
                          Cheers

Awwww bugger, just had one of those days :-(

Went to Toyota today and I asked them to check the new key and program it.
So they cut the key and off they go to program it, anyway 15 minutes later they come back and say the transponder programmed ok to start the car but the key cannot be programed for the open/close central locking as its the wrong frequency and for a different model (couldnt tell me what though)!

If you open the back up, there is a code on the module which apparently relates to the frequency and must be the same as you original master.

And that will be $83 for the trouble thanks:-(

                            Bugger!

So it cost me $140 for the key and $83 to program (NOT) it.
Could have got the same from Mr Minite for $150................dagnabbit :-(

Just found a post else where to program a key for a 4 Runner. Might be relevant but seems there are two activities to be programmed (remote lock/unlock and starting vehicle) and don't know if it covers both:
