  • N70ZZL size starter battery?

How many here are running an N70ZZL size battery as their starter?

My 120 currently has an NS70L size battery, which seems to sit quite well in the space provided without hanging out 'into space' in the engine bay.

The battery is almost dead, and as it only has 560 CCA, I want to (and have been recommended to) replace it with the N70ZZL size (660 CCA).

This battery is about 40mm longer than the NS70L, so I'm a little concerned about how it would handle the rough stuff (particularly extended corrugated road driving) with part of the battery (an extra 2cm) not being supported.

    Any feedback?

Well the deed is done, so time will tell.......

Now it's in, I'm not that concerned about the extra overhang.

Have always run that size on both sides and in both my Prados without any problems ever. Extra bit of grunt for running the winch too.

Precisely why I wanted the bigger one too - not sure why the previous owner went for a 520 CCA battery with the winch attached......

Had N70ZZs on both sides in my old 80 as well, so I know they work well with the winch, etc.

          Hi
Don't the V6's run a smaller Battery than their Diesel cousins due to the higher cranking load?
Did you replace the plastic tray under the battery also?

            Re: N70ZZL size starter battery?

            Hey everyone,

I'm planning on replacing my OEM starting battery with a N70ZZL4WD Yuasa, which is 305mm long, so it definitely doesn't fit the existing N70S dimensioned factory tray. Has anyone got a suggestion for a replacement passenger side tray to take the longer N70, I definitely want a longer tray for the replacement N70ZZL4WD to be seated properly and not slipping around on corrugations.

Any good suggestions ?? Unfortunately the Piranha trays only fit the drivers side, so prolly have to be a supercheap/autobarn cheapie ???

            Best

              Hey Whitey
I had plans to acquire a new tray from Toyota parts department, to suit the diesel engined 120 series Prado.
Our V6 was still running the original battery and thought it was only a matter of time before it failed.
The plan was to replace the 560 CCA N70 with a N70ZZ size battery. As things turned out it did Shite its self while we were away last year, and replaced it with the same sized N70 as the said tray had not been acquired! "note to self - J.F.D.I."
The Original white plastic tray has locating lugs moulded into its under side, which fit into the guard mount brace.
              Hope this helps cheers Troy

No, just took it out. The auto electrician who tested the old battery and recommended I replace it said they basically do nothing and are a waste of space.

If the battery is clamped down properly it isn't going to rub or move anyway, and if the battery starts leaking then you've got more problems than a small plastic tray is going to solve.....

Hi Fellas. I was also horrified the way the N70 hangs out in space in my KZJ95 with nothing but a plastic tray with some locating tabs under it. I am fitting another battery on the passengers side of the engine bay and am fitting a 3mm steel plate under both trays. I must say in Toyota's defense though - it hasn't caused any problems to date. Cheers.

                    Hey everyone,

I just fitted a $20 SCA "large" battery tray from Supercheap, powder coated, bit under 340mm long, so easily fits an N70ZZ (305mm), bolted it in to the existing battery mounting with 5 self drilling screws, easy and cheap solution, not sure what the plate thickness is, prolly 2mm, is more than good enough for the job.

Far more satisfactory than that plastic factory tray.

What type of batteries are others running in their Prado's which fit the standard tray? I've noticed that Century and Exide make a commercial battery which fits the standard tray and they are both rated at 600 CCA. The Century has 130 minutes RC and the Exide 120. The Exide is SAE polarity so this would be preferable for fitment. I've never quite understood the maintenance free aspect as I do like to keep an eye on electrolyte levels and top off when necessary.

I'm using a marine pro myself as they handle vibrations from corrugations better and have a
                        reasonable deep cycle capacity.

                        Cheers

I have just ordered a red top Optima 34, 800CCA, believing it will have better vibration resilience, as a standard battery. $240 off ebay. The local battery shop stored the same battery for $375 .... that's 1.5 times as much ... and was willing to go down as "low" as $335. not good enough.

I sell century century & optima's, I don't know how they can do those for anywhere near that price.
Perhaps they are grey imports lol.......

Battery discounters are just around the corner from me and they do them for $275, so not all that much more. It was certainly an eye opener when I discovered these guys as it really highlights how much others (super cheap, repco, auto barn, etc) are ripping people off.
