On the weekend I installed a Chip-It chip and EGT module to my Prado. The power increase was noticeable but only lasted about an hour before the engine check light came on along with LO4 and traction control lights flashing. I followed the instruction manual word for word. I called the guys at Chip-It and they where very helpful and over the phone we checked out every possible thing that could be causing the problem. To make a long story short they put it down to a faulty chip. I posted it back to them today and eagerly wait for a new or repaired one to arrive.

Re: My engine chipping experience so far
I'm not sure what paramaters the Chip-it unit changes but units that increase the fuel rail pressure have been known to cause fault codes in D4D engines across the different vehicle platforms (Hilux, prado, Hiace). This was a major factor in my decision to use a Stienbauer unit as I was able to verify that it does not alter fuel rail pressure.

Re: My engine chipping experience so far
Hi Barry,
I have exactly the same problem with my Chip It chip. I have already sent the chip back for the upgrade to the software but unfortunately the fault remains. Talking to the guys at Chip It they now believe that the harness could be at fault and are supposed to be sending over a replacement but it hasnt arrived as yet. Have you experienced the chip not allowing the motor to fire yet and the starter keeps winding over until you press the button again to stop it? All in all the chip works a treat when it is running properly (about 3 weeks in the last 5 months ) I am at the stage that i have just removed the fuse and operating the vehicle as normal until the new harness arrives as the vehicle was usually going into limp mode at the worst times possible! :x If the new harness doesnt fix the problems they will be getting the chip returned to them at warp speed!

My mate just returned his DP chip for his Land Rover. At first it was fine then the engine started running rough. They gave him a replacement unit and a day later that blew up so he told them to jam it up there ar$$.
I have recently noticed a sound coming from my brake pedal after start up. It's a "click" sort of sound very similar to the Down Hill Assist control sound. I have wondered if anyone else has noticed this or is there something wrong with my vehicle? I have been wondering if it has something to do with the feature that holds the brakes on for a moment when your doing a hill start. It also only seems to have appeared after I have put a Chip-It chip on my vehicle.

Re: My engine chipping experience so far
I installed a chipit today on my 150 and experienced the same problem. This was caused because I disconnected the power supply whilst driving to test normal mode but the reconnected the chip's power supply whist the engine was running. This caused the engine to detect a fuel pressure surge and go into limp mode. It ran fine going from connected to disconnected but the error was when I reconnected it.
I restarted the engine with the chip powered down and drove back to chipit with the TC etc warning lights on. All they need to do was flash the car (not the chip) to clear the fuel pressure overload error. I wanted to wire the chip power supply to a switch on the dash so I could switch on and off but this isn't going to be possible.
Chip has been great for the rest of the dayvand the power increase in dramatic, even on program 4.
I hope this helps. As someone has already posted, the chip MUST be connected to the Aux power supply to the chip is powered down during cranking.

Re: My engine chipping experience so far
Thats interesting that the fault shows when there is surge in rail pressure because my car usually faulted when i lifted my foot off the pedal after hard acceleration. I wonder if that would cause the fault? It shouldn't though I guess. I just hope I get mine back from Chip-it before the long weekend. I got it Friday week put it on saturday an hour later started playing up, sent back monday, a week later they haven't even looked at it when I spoke to them today. Not very impressed with Chip-It at this stage.

****UPDATE*****
I got my chip and harness returned yesterday with a note saying no fault found. So I put the chip back on car and guess what, same problem engine goes into limp mode briefly and shuts down. So I call up Chip-It asking for a refund. I get put through to a bloke who is baffled by what is going on and wants to fix it for me instead of me returning it. Which is fair enough. Anyway long story short he is sending me a OBD2 scan tool to see what fault code the engine is producing so we can get to the bottom of whats going on. A noticed when the chip is on the car before it's going into fault I could here a clicking sound from around the throttle area. I'm thinking that maybe the latest batch of Prado's have changed something slightly in there engine management firmware.Last edited by barryswanson; 28-04-2011, 10:00 PM.

I would be interested to hear what the problem is. I have had a similar problem, with the car going into limp home mode when I was in the middle of an intersection. Luckily I have a scangauge and simply cleared the code and continued. I have also had the problem where every now and then the car won't start, but if you stop and try again it starts no problems.
I wouldn't add a chip without having some sort of OBD scanner personally!

Ok, so it turns out my chip had the wrong firmware on it. Received replacement today and it works greatLast edited by barryswanson; 06-05-2011, 06:22 PM.

Hi Barry,
Let me know how this goes for you. I have had the firmware upgrade on my chip and it was still suffering from the same problems. Chip it then sent me the new harness which plugs into a 12v socket and still the problem persisted. I have even tried wiring the chip power to the dual battery with no luck. I have decided to send the chip back and ask for a full refund as it has never performed as advertised since purchasing it in December! The last time it went into limp home mode was when i went to accelerate across an intersection........ potentially a very dangerous time to loose all power! I no longer have confidence in this product! I will keep you all informed on how the refund request goes.

Hi guys.
Just been told about this thread and thought to join to say hi and to see if I can lend a hand with some Chip It issues. I might not have all the answers but I will try to be beneficial where I can.
The Prado and the 70 Series Land Crusiers are the only vehicles known to have the starting issue. The work around, as mentioned by a previous poster, is to take the power supply to the Chip It module from an ACC (accessories) supply. ie Cig lighter, head lights or in the case of the LC Toyota graciously supply a "POWER OUTLET" box under the bonnet (driver's side). Not sure of the latest model Prado but last years does not have an separate power outlet as the LC does.
Basically, the chip's 12 volts (+) power supply needs to cut out during engine cranking so the vehicle is starting on the base factory MAP. Then when the key is returned to the run position the chip is then active.
If the issue still exists, please check that the power supply you have is in fact dropping out on engine cranking. If it still exists we probably sent out the Chip with the firemware to suit a standard D4D engine. Sorry about that. But don't judge us on being human and making mistakes ... but how we handle those mistakes. I think we would all agree that its not the mistakes that makes or breaks a companies reputation but the after sales support. I know that's what I look for. Hopefully others think as I do.
If you wish to discuss, please call me on 0412 304030.
Many thanks
