  • New GXL selecting 5th at low speed/RPM

    Hi folks,

Picked up our 2011 GXL diesel automatic last Thursday and have a question about the gearing and RPM.

Our Prado seems to be reaching top gear (5th) extremely early, such that around 75-80km/h, it's in 5th gear at 1500-1600RPM and the green ECO light is on. When it's at this high gear at such low speed and RPM, to me it sounds like it's labouring, though as this is my first diesel, I thought I would ask if it is normal.

So my question is .... is it normal for our 150 to be changing into 5th gear at around 75-80km/h, sitting at 1500-1600RPM, with the engine sound resonating through the cabin?

    Thanks in advance
    Sass.

Yes it is normal and you'll find lots of stuff on this forum about the issue. Try a search for 1500rpm or start with this post viewtopic.php?f=51&t=8983

Thanks for the reply. I had started reading that thread, which at the outset seemed like more of a vibration/rattling problem that people were experiencing. Whereas I was more wanting to know whether it was 'proper' for the Prado to be selecting 5th gear at 80k when the resulting RPM was so low. Which it seems it is! I'm not getting any rattles etc at 1500RPM .... just that resonance that makes you feel like the car is in too hight a gear and needs to be kicked back to 4th.

I shall have more of a read of that thread in any case.

      Thanks
      Sass.

Yup thats normal. You can always just push the gear lever to the right and it will drop back to fourth. Apparently snorkels and engine chips reduce the resonance.

          Sass,
I'll think you'll find it is normal for the late model auto transmissions. The same thing happens in my 09 V6, and I agree that the revs seem way too low, at low speed. They've obviously tried to do it for the economy. You may need to do as I do .... drive it like a manual. Drive it in fourth when you need to. Do'nt know much about the diesels, but IMO the four speed auto was the best matched box for the 120 V6's.
