  • Underbody fuel filter

For those of you who already know, I apologise. I'm not trying to teach you how to suck eggs.
For those that dont know, there is a second fuel filter in the diesel models underneath the car next to the tailshaft. I finally got around to replacing mine today and upon inspecting the stuff that came out of it, I presume it hasnt been changed in a long time.
There were no distinct particles, but the left over diesel in this filter was black like used engine oil! It hadnt come through to the main filter (touch wood) but it's certainly worth being aware that the filter is there and needs replacing!

    Brad.

Do you have a part number for this filter?

      Re: Underbody fuel filter

      That is very interesting.
I have read conflicting posts on various forums about the filter in question, and as i am a servicing Nazi, would like to get it attended to, if it is required.
I recently enquired about this second filter at my local Toyota dealer in Kingswood. The parts guys brought up the fuel system schematic on the computer, and showed me that there “is no second filter in the 120 d4d”.
After this, I visited Bursons and enquired about the second filter. The guy there identified this filter, although I did not see the computer screen, or get a part number. He said that he had never had a request for this filter, which was why it was not in stock.
I too, would be grateful for a part number.

The underbody filter is definately there. Toyota seem to change a fuel filter every 20 000km on my car. They alternate between the under bonnet filter and under body filter so each filter sees 40 000km of service. I've verified this by marking the date with a silver pen and checking this after each service.

Gxl_d4d is right. The owners manual refers to two types of filters. One is Fuel Filter (All models) - this is the one under the bonnet. The other is Fuel Filter (Diesel models -dual fuel tanks). This is the one underneath. I will get the part number off my receipt tommorrow. They're not cheap either. Toyota here in town stole $92.00 off me for a filter smaller than the main one. If you go into Toyota, just ask for the second filter underneath the car. It is almost identical to the inline filter as fitted to Commodores. It has an orange clip which pops out with a flat head screw driver and the pipe slides off the barb on the filter. Please guys, if you have read the posts about dying D-4D's, please replace this filter!! It's cheap insurance and just another preventative measure to protect our motors.

Will supply the part number ASAP.

Is this only on the D4d models or for the 1kz models as well?? Would like to see a pic of it if anyone can help out, just to narrow down the location of it.

As far as i'm aware it is for any model with the dual fuel tanks but I cant confirm that. As for the location, it's pretty much in the exact middle of the car, above the tail shaft. It's pretty hard to see because it is hidden by the tail shaft. It is a small black canister filter with two barbed pipes on each end.

As for aftermarket, let me know if you find one!! I'm not aware of any at the moment, though I'd prefer to spend the money on a genuine Toyota filter.

                  Cheers

As I mentioned above, there is apparently an aftermarket filter available. Try Bursons.

(not the 1kz) I have looked through Toyodiy and it only

Is this the filter in question??

What is the process for changing it, I.e. does much fuel come out when it is removed?
Does the orange clip release from the side with the notch in it or the other end?
                        Any other Do's or Don'ts?

Spot On!! Thats the bugger there. I was suprised at how much fuel came out - pretty much nothing! I thought it would be under a bit of pressure but mine just dribbled a few drops and that was it. You will need a small flat head screwdriver to prise in the small cut out on the face of the orange clip. With your other hand you need to push the tabs on the other side of the orange clip downwards as you prise the clip with the flat head screwdriver. Confused yet?

The orange clip doesnt come off completely, it just clicks out about 3-4mm and you will feel the lines are loose. I found it easier to loosen the two bolts that hold the filter to the body so you can get your hands in there. The lines just slide off after that. Fitting is reversal - just remember which way around it goes as it will only filter in one direction. Its also alot easier if you can get the car off the ground a little i.e ramps/axle stands.

Can anyone let me know if any gunk comes out of theirs when they change it. As I said, I had no major particle but the diesel was completely black, like someone had tipped black paint in my tank.

Well I got the filter and changed it today. A little fiddly due to the position but otherwise no problems. The existing filter had not been changed for 3 years ( i checked the service invoices). The fuel that came out of the old filter looked very clean, nothing black at all. I don't think I'll be changing it again for a while .

Nice work JJT! That's interesting that your fuel was clean in the filter. Maybe I should change my filter again soon and see if it's black still? I still cant get over how black it was! Anyway, glad you've changed it. A bit more peace of mind for you.
