  • Twin Intercooler - why not?

    Left the interior light on for two days while parked in the shed so grabbed ranger to jump start it.

    While they were both idling away I noticed the Ranger has a front intercooler and prado an engine one.

    This got me thinking - why not fit a front intercooler to the Prado as well (surely work wouldnt miss the one off the ranger :lol: )

    I know zilch really about intercooler mods so I imagine there is a reason this doesnt happen.

    Is it 'lag' because of all the ducting needed?

    Would that lag just be at take off but on the highway it would be sweet? How would it be once you are up and running?

    I take it the lag could not cause it to be less powerful than a non turbo vehicle?

    Lots of questions, what the answers?

    You shouldn't have lag once you're moving unless you install a ridiculously large intercooler. You'd see some lag as you need to bring a bigger volume of air up in pressure.

      I personally wouldn't do it, unless you decide to upgrade the turbo at the same time.

      The way it works, your turbo can supply X ammount of volume of air which goes through the intercooler (cool air is denser and hence more power is produced (with the right amount of fuel, ignition timing etc)).

      If you put in a 2nd intercooler your turbo will still supply the same ammount of air but it will increase your lag as there is bigger volume to fill. You might increase the power slightly (cooling already cool air?) but it will come at a much greater lag = pointless

        Hey TT are you addicted to power now that you have the chip fitted Rather than installing a second intercooler what about improving the air flow through the one you already have by fitting a bonnet scoop? Have a lok here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2169&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=scoo p Joey has dyno figures and he reckons it made a huge difference to the 1kz.

          chip, dumpipe and exhaust and wind the boost up to about 14psi and get a good dynotune is all you will get out of a 1kz, never heard of twin coolers on a single turbo engine, i have seen twin intercoolers on twin turbo vehicles, as everyone is saying, you will get more lag, minimal if any performance increase, also if you but a front mount in there isnt going to be much room left for airflow if you have a bullbar and a set of driving lights bolted to the front, just a thought cheers samo
          had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

                I suppose it comes down to whether or not the air is at ambient once it gets to the inlet manifold?

                Might see if there is a spot in the manifold for a temp probe and see.
