  • Front King Springs - turbo diesel 90 guys help!

    Alright here is the issue....

My 90 series is a turbo diesel and I have an alloy bar which the manufacturer says weighs about 30kg.

I understand that the turbo diesel engine itself is ard 70kgs heavier than the petrol engine.

Currently I have normal Kings Springs (KTFR58) in the fronts and KTRR59 in the rear.

However, I was told that the springs in the front should be the heavy duty version (i.e. KTFR58HD) due to the extra weight of the diesel engine and alloy bar. I also plan to install a 2nd battery and bashplate in the near future.

My rear height measures ard 790mm and fronts ard 740mm, a 50mm difference, hence I find the front droop noticible. I notice that most 90 owners who have installed raised springs do not get more than 20 or 30mm difference between the rear and the front.

Can any TD 90 series guys who use King Springs confirm if the heavy duty version should be used instead of the normal springs?

    Thank you

hi, sorry i cant offer help but i have same car/alloy bar like your self with standard suspension. Just wondering where your measurements are taken from, ie. Bottom of flare/wheel arch to center of axle/hub. I only ask as i am about to order king springs for mine and was going to order what you have but glad i read your post in regards to the front springs. Ill keep an eye what people say. I know when i priced up OME suspension they list a diferent front spring for diesel and petrol and the arb bloke said its because of the weight diferance. If you do change to the front hd spring id be interested in the hight then. Cheers

      Hi Robo76,

You can also refer to this post:

      viewtopic.php?f=21&t=11776&p=158284#p158284

It suggests HD springs for the front if turbo diesel and with added accessories (which I will add in the future).

I believe Ironman also has different front springs for the petrol and the diesel. One of the members in his build mentioned he was given a set of front springs which made his front sit higher than the rear of his petrol Prado. I believe he was given diesel front springs instead of petrol version (he managed to change the springs later on).

My measurement is taken from the bottom of the arch to the bottom of the rim (16 inch rim).

I am seriously contemplating changing to HD springs and therefore am seeking opinions of the TD prado owners here...

no worries, thanks for that info. Be good to get that front end up closer to the rear, main reason im replacing mine as my front ones have sagged heaps from new, backs are still with in a few mm of what they were new. Good luck with yours

Re: Front King Springs - turbo diesel 90 guys help!

I'm not entirely sure if there is any real requirement for the heavy duty springs to be used on a diesel or if its just become a truism, all I can tell you is my experience. I had Dobinsons all round and the front was 20mm higher than the rear and was even more accentuated when the camper trailer was attached. I had ongoing problems with the CVs so my mechanic suggested I needed to drop the front.

I had heavy duty Dobinsons replaced with heavy duty Kings and lost 35mm and ended up with the front around 15mm lower than the rear. Since fitment the Kings have dropped a further 5mm, but the vehicle definately looks more balanced with the nose lower than the rear. I have the factory steel bar and dual batteries and currently my vehicle measures 780mm at the rear and 760mm at the front.

The mechanic said the Dobinsons really did belong in a truck (a Mack truck) and it took some effort to compress them on removal so we noticed an immediate improvement in ride quality, whereas you may notice a harsher ride going from normal Kings to heavy duty.

Hi Fellas. Fitted Dobi's to my Prado and listed front springs looked f________ rediculous. Ended up swapping them for V6 petrol fronts and no more grief apart from hard ride. I wouldn't fit these again unless using vehicle heavily loaded full time. Still good and high (although front 1/2 shafts nicely level) after 40,000 km. I still don't know how they got it so wrong with the listed fronts - the negative camber was like the back end of a fiat bambina and it would have knackered the CV's in short order. Cheers.

Hi Fellas. Just wandered out and measured ride height out of interest. The ride has settled about 4mm overall on a 50mm lift after 40k. Cheers.

                  Hey ya,
Found this thread through google when deciding what spring to put on my 95 series. I went with king springs ktfr58 and ktrr59. I have the turbo diesel and alloy bar also. After various measurements, the height came up to 530 on front and 582 on rear from center of wheels ( 751 front and 803 from bottom of 16 inch rim). Didnt record a previous measurement.
I am dissappointed with the differance as the rear looks way to high. I did discuss this prior to getting the springs as i had read these theads however the supplier was adamant unless i was carrying 300-500kg of weight constantly in the front, it would be very rigid. They gave me the king spring height specs of 'approx' 535 KTFR 58 and 580 KTRR 59. That is a differance of 45mm?? So surely that cant be right?? And the spec for the KTFR 58 HD are 565 (30mm higher).... now im confused. Im thinking of putting the HD's in as they said they are happy to swap them over and besides the kyb shocks didnt come with any bushes or washes so i had to find others in my assortment of bits to make do. So it gives me a chance to change them over also.
But im just a little worried the extra angle of the drive shafts may cause premature wear.
Any help on this front would be great. Cheers

KTFR vs KTRR - Don't compare coil heights between front/rear - they have different suspension designs so comparison is entirely irrelevant.

Here's some coil free heights and lift estimates based on my vehicle:

                    KTFR-58 - 350 free height - 565lbs - 1.1" lift approx
                    KTFR-58HD - 365 free height - 575lbs 1.8" lift approx
                    OME 2881 - 375 free height - 500lbs 1.5" lift approx
                    OME 2882 - 395 free height - 500lbs 2.3" lift approx

OME 2882 is a strictly diesel and loaded coil only, so given mine is a petrol, ARB does their best to talk me out of using it. What they don't consider is the extra weight of my engine due to TRD, bash plates, and the frontal down force created by extra long coils in the rear. I get 2" from them and very happy with that.

Notice also the coil rates in lbs. Kings are a very firm spring. I prefer the thinner coil from OME with longer length. They will sag quicker than a firm king though.
