  • Oils Ain't Oils

Hi guys, i've done some searchers but yet to find what i'm looking for. What brand and type of engine oils are people using in there D4D's? I'm up for a 70000km service so it's the 1st service at full price and i can't justify Toyota charging me $70 for the engine oil which would be about $10 a litre. I'll be getting Toyota to carry out the service but i'll supply the engine oil.

Is Castrol GTX Diesel Engine Oil - 15W-40 okay to use or would Castrol Magnatec Diesel Engine Oil - 15W-40 be a better product? Or is there better brands out there?

    Cheers
    Geoff

Hi Geoff. If your already decided to get toyota to do the service, IMO I wouldnt bother about trying to save $10-$20 bucks on oil. I would try another mechanic and get a quote for the service.

I use the oil that Toyota recommend and use for the D4D. Either way you go, good luck.

Hi D4D-GXL, I've got a leaseplan vehicle so prob easier getting Toyota to service it? Repco have 10L GTX Diesel on sale for $48.99, so that's about $35 for Oil for one service. $35 in my pocket is better then theirs
Does anyone use GTX Diesel oil in there D4D?
      Cheers

If you're going to supply the oil to toyota, you can get Delo 400 for around $80/20L drum.

if your after a decent 15w40 get a 20L drum of castrol rx super. Used it for years at a toyota dealership i worked at and used it in my turbo diesel hilux and prado for years. Valve gear is always spotless when rocker cover off for valve clearance checks. Pick it up from supercheap for around 100 bucks a drum

+1 for RX Super. It was all that went into my 90 series. And tractor. Bit of a waste on the tractor but it beat having multiple oil containers. You get 3 fills out of a 20L drum more or less.

Okay, I've bitten the bullet... Repco has 10l Castrol GTX Diesel oil on sale until 27Th March for $48.99. I ducked into Supercheap to grab some other gear and asked them about the price of there 10l GTX Diesel oil which is for sale for $68.95. Told Supercheap about Repco's deal at the moment and they beat the price by $4.18. So i ended up getting 2 10l bottles of GTX Diesel engine oil for $44.81 each! Might grab some more bottles next week  So my oil for a service will cost about $32 instead of $70 Toyota wanted to charge me! A saving of $38 8)
              Cheers

I used the castrol diesel GTX for years in hilux's , when i changed over to Prado i continued with the existing oil in the car - Penrite Diesel 15W 50, it is slightly better that the castrol and is semi-synthetic. Slightly more expensive. I have noticed the oil seems to be a bit cleaner, the castrol went black really quickly where the penrite stays clearer longer.

I think that the castrol is ok anyway

                Regards

                    Re: Oils Ain't Oils

Hi Jeff. Two schools of thought on how clean the oil stays. Some like it to stay clean thinking it is better on internal components. 2nd school of thought (one I subscribe to) is that diesel oil is supposed to be high detergent and better the crap in the sump and being drained away than building up sludge in the bowels of the motor. When I was in the shop, we often serviced large machinary and commonly found the oil turned black within 1-1/2 hours of a complete oil/filters servicing. On eventual teardown, the internals would be spotless with no residual varnish.
My 1KZ-TE takes around a week to darken and after 5,000 km is black. This is after oil/filter intervals of 5,000 km for the last 45,000 km. GTX 15/40 diesel was my preferred oil but hurts at around $10-00/litre now. Supercheap and Repco now $7-50/litre for 10 litre packs of 15/40 Valvoline (no savings at 20 litre tubs) so am giving that a try. Cheers.

Just so you guys know, checked with the father in law and all Toyota branded fluids except coolant are castrol. So if your after the exact toyota fluid just jot down specs and castrol equivelant will be exact same... Not just similar - exact.

Personally I use penrite for engine because the +10 will burn less with my higher kays. castrol for everything else...
