  • need help with hid headlights and ipf hid spot lights

hi i need some help with hid headlights I got a set of hid headlight that does high beam and dipped beam and when you fit the hid kit your remove the plugs from the old head lght globes. fit the hid globe in to the head light fit the new plug from the ballast and from the ballast box there is an male conncetor with 3 pins that you fit in the plug that was pluged in to the old globe. this is on the left hand side the old 3 pin plug on the right hand side does not get used now. as all the other plugs are all fool proof so can go wrong and every thing worked good iwas happy with the out put of the lights and its was great on hi beam. now this is where my problum starts i have saved up some cash i bought a set of ipf spot light {hid} fitted the using arb kit for ipf lights went to connect to headlight to get a feed from the hi beam. i tested which wire was for the high beam with test light connected the wire and the spot lights dont work???????? I have checked all the wires and all as per the drawing. so i pulled out the hid's in the headlights and put the standard globes backin and the spot lights work on high beam and you can turn off with the little mouse switch. does any one have any ideas why the spot light dont work with the hid globes in i hope this makes some sence and thanks for reading if any one know a good auto sparky in the northern suburbs of melbourne pls let me know as its doing my head in

Are you able to provide a wiring diagram for the HID installation?

      Hi hajb,

You will need to connect the ballast units of the spot lights in parallel with the ballast for the high beams ie the 12V side.
If your trying to connect to the globe side it won't work as the hid globes work on high voltage not 12V dc.

Also the Prado uses a funny system from memory wherein negative is switched to the filaments and not
positive which is more the norm.

      Cheers

Leigh is on the right track. And there is an existing spotlight wiring thread which shows HOW to connect a spotlight relay to the "odd" wiring of the Prado headlights.

Re: need help with hid headlights and ipf hid spot lights

you need to provide power to the balast. is power to spottie goes directly to the balast/regulator... the your new hid globe connects to the regulator keep in mind. they are ploarity consous. that meaning they will only ignite on the correct polairity.. ie ++ and -- has to be correctly wired

                  Hi Guys,
Was just wondering if someone out could please shed some like on my recent HID headlight and HID spotlight dramas.....
I'm very new to HID so installation took a while after some research. Installed a 100w HID kit into my IPF spotties and they worked a treat! My next project was to install a HID kit into my headlights. I went for a 55w kit and upon completion I discover that my spotties wouldn't turn on and only after reading through this forum (particularly this thread) did I learn that a load module would fix my issues. Like Hajb, I got myself a newpro-tech load module and when I initially installed it I noticed I had power to the spotties switch. Upon turning the spotties on, only one of them came on? I thought this very odd.....after turning them off and on again a few times the 2nd one came on but fluctuated for a bit and then turned off....from that moment on not matter what I tried the 2nd one didn't come back on? I'm not real skilled in auto electronics but did some basic fault finding and it appears that the ballast for the 2nd spottie doesn't appear to be working nor getting warm....I've got no idea? Would the installation of this load module blow a ballast? Do ballasts have a internal cut out switch? I would have thought they'd take a hammering before they would pack it in? Is there any indicator to determine whether the ballast has blown?
Any info and or assistance would be appreciated.
                  Cheers
                  Rob
