  • Rattle / Clashing sound in engine

Been out in the car today and came round a left hand corner and the engine starting rattling. When it accelerates the rattle gets louder so I took it into my garage bloke late this afternoon (6pm) and he listened to it and revved it a few times and when the revs get to 3000/4000 it is almost like a clashing sound. It doesn't effect the engine working or pulling strongly but there is a loud new rattle in it. He checked the oil level and turned the air-con on and off but it is still there.
I am taking the car back to my garage bloke at 7:30am tomorrow and he will spend time on it then.
The engine is the old engine NOT the D4D as it is a 2004 model 120 diesel.
Any ideas I can take to the mechanic tomorrow???
    Thanks!!

Well, the car is in the hands of Toyota and their mechanic said that it is not a noise he has ever heard before. How often have you heard that said??

Toyota says it is not the engine mounts as I went in to them this morning and asked them to check those first. They now think it might be the injectors and have taken them out and sent them off to a specialist.
Can you hear the cash register rattling here as well as the engine in the car?
          I think I can..........Chink, chink, chink!!!

Re: Rattle / Clashing sound in engine

I have been to Toyota again this morning and the injectors have come out to be in good condition but I have given them permission to change the tips; which will cost quite a bit apparently:
BUT the next thing that the chief mechanic thinks that it would be is the tip of a glow plug might have come off: just what was suggested by "tassie tiger". I was going to tell them about your suggestion but the reception bloke said that the chief mechanic wanted to check that next before I had a chance to say it. Let's hope you are correct and they can get to the bottom of this problem without having to start on dismantling the engine.
I should know after lunch today if the glow plug is the problem.

Re: Rattle / Clashing sound in engine

"tassie tiger" you were right on the money. It is the tip of a glow plug has come off. The engine has to be stripped; the offending piston has to be checked as well as the head; parts replaced if required and about 14 hours of labour. Costs will be well into 4 figures.
Remember I thought I could hear a cash register ticking over!!!!!

Re: Rattle / Clashing sound in engine

One piston damaged and the head and crank shaft being sent away for checking so Toyota says; a complete engine rebuild is what is needed or they won't give any guarantee at all. So that's what a broken tip of a glow plug can create.

                  Cost??
Who knows... Hope to find out soon and it won't be fixed for another 7 to 10 days so that will be almost 3 weeks in their workshop.

Re: Rattle / Clashing sound in engine

Update today from my last post.
The crank shaft is fine and the head is fine so no damage there so only damage seems to be on the surface of one piston caused by the tip of the glow plug coming off and being embedded into the top of the piston.
BUT: so that Toyota will guarantee all their work on the engine; the 4 pistons have to be replaced with rings and bearings; the main bearings have to be replaced as well in the rebuild and 4 new glow plugs also.
A kit of gaskets are needed to do all this work and Toyota don't have them so it is a 2/3 week wait until they arrive from Japan. How good is that??
We were hoping to go away in the car last weekend; had to cancel that and now we will be lucky to have it back by Easter and we were hoping to go camping for 2 weeks then. I wonder whether we will get away for that.
I asked about running the car in after the rebuild and they said no and I also asked about pulling a camper trailer weighing just over 1 tonne and was told that I should get a few kms on the clock before doing that but wasn't told how many.
I also asked about whether they wanted the car back to change the oil and check on everything after about 1000km but they won't need to see it again after I collect it. Is that usual after a full engine rebuild??
Present estimate of costs: $7500........... for one broken off tip of a glow plug..

                      Ouch !!!!

Thats a big hit on the pocket.
Will Toyota stand any of the bill for you?

I hope you don't have to pay the whole bill, while Toyota get off free.

Bloody hell, your dealer must be a wanker....

                        1. Yes do run the engine in to allow the rings to bed in correctly. Drive for about 500kms (more is fine, less is bad) at varying speeds and loads on the engine. Use different gears up and down hills, to work the engine thru the rev range.

                        2. Please do take the car to the dealer and 'instruct' him to change the engine oil and filter after 1000kms. Also 'instruct' the service manager to have the engine filter cut and inspected. Also 'instruct' him to show you the cut filter and inspect it for metal. A small amount of fine particles of metal is fair, but larger bits are a cause for concern.

Good luck. Any further issues after the rebuild, I suggest you go to another Toyota dealer.

ps - I have been a diesel mechanic for 20 years, so take notice of this post if you want to save money in the long run......

Re: Rattle / Clashing sound in engine

To update this disappointing saga of getting my car repaired, some parts have arrived from Japan but not all. They have sent 3 pistons (that is little use for a 4 piston engine) and no gaskets.

From tomorrow they will have had the car for 5 weeks and can't give me any date as to when it will be fixed.
I am lucky in that I do have a friend/contact in headoffice of Toyota Qld who deals with parts and he says that the story I am being told is correct. He has checked and there is not a spare piston or gasket set in any dealership in Australia: he has checked for me.

Here is the latest announcement from Japan about its factories which are in the tsunami affected areas.

"Toyota Motor Corp. said Friday, 8 April, it will resume car production at all its plants in Japan at half capacity from April 18 to 27 after the March earthquake and tsunami forced it to halt manufacturing due to shortages of parts and power.

Toyota, the world's No. 1 automaker, said production at its 18 plants will then halt from April 28 to May 9, a period that includes Golden Week holidays when factories would normally close.

Toyota said the parts shortage has been gradually improving but it is still struggling to get around 150 types of parts. Toyota previously said there were shortages of about 500 types of components. The automaker has suffered a production loss of 260,000 cars from March 14 through to Friday."

I was told by the Service Manager that they will run out of oil and air filters and other service required components soon so delay taking your car in for a service: they might not have a filter for it.

At last, it appears that Toyota have the parts to make the repairs and I should get the car back next week. That will be 8 weeks sitting in at Toyota.
Toyota have lent us a Corolla for 6 of these weeks and we have just been on a trip to Rockhampton and back and I can say that they are not made for long trips; road noise is deafening; tyres noisy and seats and suspension are quite hard and jolting. The old back is not coping well.
