  • Cruising Range to Zero ? Diesel

Having had the Prado for 4 months now and planning on the Cape York trip around mid July I thought about finding out how many kilometres was left to MT after the cruising range indicated zero. Averaging 10.9 litres/100KLMs
So filled the 5 litre tin up,put in the rear and waited to zero indication, set the trip meter to zero and drove around till MT. After 175 KLM prado stops 8)
Put the 5 litres in and off to servo no problems.
After 123 litres indication of full tank. Wait 1 minute, fill 1 litre, wait fill :x and so on. After 15 minutes showing 144 litres added. (Note: next service fault report to dealer) Not sure if anyone else has had this problem but if you are thinking you have 150 litres in tank and doing the long trip you could be caught out. Also based on the 175KLM travelled 15/17 litres would be left after Cruising range indicates zero.
Past vehicles i have owned have had range of 40 - 60 klms after zero so quite a bit of margin on the prado.

You ran your D4D out of fuel :!: :?:

Just a word of warning about running your engines out of fuel. Last time I did this it led to some dramas due to crap getting sucked up from the bottom of the tank. Long story short, I needed a new fuel filter and a reset of the ECU to clear the fault code that had caused "limp home mode". Luckily no damage done to the fuel pump. This was with a 1KZ-TE 90 series. I would be petrified about running a D4D out of fuel given the sensitivity of their common rail fuel delivery system. Be carefull!

Was that 144 including the 5 you put into the tank after running out?
Otherwise it would be 149 - pretty close.

I always love the comments about "it picked up crap from the bottom of the tank because I ran out of fuel" Like the pickup isn't always at the bottom of the tank

          Cheers
