Sorry Christine but NO you can't plug in a 300W inverter as the rear socket has a maximum rating of 120Ws. I'm sure if you use the search facility in Pradopoint you will find a solution that involves cabling up a new socket with the capability to do what you require.AlenP

Re: wiring rear socket to dometic rc1180 3 way fridge
3 way means it will run off gas, 240V AC or directly off 12V DC so you don't really need the inverter.
But it will still draw 10 amps at 12V - way to much for the rear socket.
Truthfully though, it's never going to work that well in a vehicle. ( I know, I used to run one of these till I got a compressor fridge.)
I think it's because an absorption fridge needs to be steady and perfectly level to work properly, something it won't get much of in a moving vehicle.
It will run best when you're stopped, but because it drains the battery so fast, you need to turn it off to stop the battery going flat.
Also they need a good airflow and ventilation, which is not great in back of a car.
These are the problems I found anyway, which is why I got a Waeco compressor fridge ( we still have the 3 way for running on gas at camp )
You COULD run a Waeco or Engel off the rear socket,as i only draws around 2.5 amps, but I'd still recommend running a dedicated wire and socket.Cheers, Wayne

The fuse for the socket is 10 amps and to run the fridge, the fuse must be rated at least 25% higher than the maximum constant current load the fuse will handle.
In your case the next fuse size up is a 15 amp fuse for you fridge ( or a 30 amp fuse for your inverter ), which would be fine if the wire running to the power socket could handle that load safely. Your vehicle’s wiring can not handle the potential of the extra current so you really need to run a new circuit for your fridge and use a different plug on your fridge.
The cigarette type plugs and sockets, while rated ate anything up to 20 amps, usually reach their limits at 5 amp current loads.
Try running something like 8B&S twin cable ( that’s 7.9mm2 x 2 ) from your battery to the rear and use a set of Anderson 30 amp PowerPoles to replace the cigarette type plug an socket.
Fit a 30 amp auto resetting circuit breaker at the battery end of the 8B&S positive.
This will allow you to run your fridge or your inverter with minimal voltage drop and the Anderson PowerPoles won’t rattle apart while driving.

Thanks for your advice.
Do I take the Prado to an auto sparkie or is this a simple job for hubbie. Any idea what an auto sparkie would charge me

Plus, you can always ask any questions you have about how to do this sort of work, on this forum and you will get loads of good advice from many of the regulars who have done this sort of work themselves and will be only too happy to talk you through your installation.

Re: wiring rear socket to dometic rc1180 3 way fridge
Hi Christine,
As previously advised, a 3 way fridge is not suitable for use in a car, for absorption
fridges to work correctly they must be kept level and not moved. The constant motion of
the vehicle will upset the workings, the fridge will work, but nowhere near as well as it would
when placed on a level non moving surface. Yes they are used in caravans but it is
assumed the van is on site, level, running on gas or 240V and not moving most of the time.
They can be run on 12V but will only barely maintain the fridges temperature whilst travelling
if you don't open the fridge. If your going to be opening and closing the fridge on long trips
you will not be happy with the results.
Running on 12V will also flatten the battery with 2-3 hours if left on without the engine running,
and a much shorter time if the battery is not in new condition.
If your determined to use the 3 way and I would strongly advise that you consider a dual battery
system and if you own a D4D I suggest you at the very least consider purchasing one of my
Alternator voltage boosters off Ebay as the poor charge rate of the later model Prados is not
going to help your cause and your cars battery with suffer badly.
As for power consumption of the Waecos, my 40ltr unit draws around 3.5A when running in normal freezer
mode. If put into turbo cool it then draws around 6A. In most cases it is safe to assume around 3.5A
hours comsumption for a 40ltr model. A compressor fridge is much more efficient than a Peltier
device.
Cheers
