  • Wet cell(2nd battery) to Gel Camper battery advice please

    Hi All
I have a Dual battery system in my prado with the dual batt mounted in the normal spot under the hood of the car. I am now looking to run some 6b&S cable through to a 50amp Anderson plug at the tow bar, then through to a 100a/h Gel battery which is inside the Camper.
I was thinking of either Having a 50amp Circuit breaker under the bonnet on the positive side and thats all. or having a 50/100amp Mega fuse at bothe ends (car and at camper)
Someone has told me that there may be some issues connecting the wet cell deep cycle to the gel deep cycle, Can anyone clarify this for me or provide me with a diagram for wiring.

    Cheers PIckles

Hi pickled, first off, with 6B&S cable, a 50 amp auto resetting circuit breaker fitted at both ends of the positive cable will give you the safest and most effective protection.

As to the type of batteries, it’s nothing but an old wives tale that you can’t connect dissimilar lead acid batteries together in a parallel set up.

There is nothing stopping you from fitting a flooded wet cell battery with a Gel Cell battery and an AGM, all side by side and contrary to many doomsday sayers, many dual battery systems are actually set up this way and function perfectly for many years without any form of problems occurring.

      Pickles,
Someone will probably say I'm wrong but if I read you right you have a wet cell main and auxillary and you wish to feed an Gel in your camper.
First I assume you have some sort of isolation between the main and auxillary
Second if isloation exists just run suitable sized cable from the auxillery back to the anderson plug and beyond (do not rely on the campers cabling) and install something like the Projecta DC20 in the camper close to the Gel
The Projecta will draw a maximum of 28 amps and put out a maximum charge rate of 20 amps at 14.4 volts which is what the Gel requires and all this should not intefere with your existing wiring. All this is because a wet and gel have different charging voltages.
The Projecta is a DC to DC converter it works down about 10.5 volts input, the output current is dependant on this voltage so the more volts you can get back there the better.
Hopefully I have not confused you too much

Don't bother with the DC-DC converter just do as you had planned and all will be good. I had a Fullriver AGM in my camper and 2 wets in the Prado and it was fine.

Hi AlenP, sorry mate but you have fallen for the info used to advertise battery chargers and DC-DC devices.

Gel batteries DO NOT need 14.4 volts to charger them, 14.4 volts is actually the maximum safe voltage that Gel and most AGMs can be charged at, at room temperatures.

ALL AUTOMOTIVE BATTERIES can be fully charged with as little as 13.2 volts, the only exception is Calcium/Calcium batteries, which need 15+ volts to fully charge them but will charge upwards of 95 to 97% by any standard alternator and while most Calcium/Calcium batteries will never be fully charge at any time, over their entire life span but this will not stop them from giving above average life spans when compered with other type of similar batteries.

          PS, I second D4D’s post.

            Hey all
Thanks for the heads up, I was pretty sure I was on the right track but didnt want to stuff up. An autolec mate said to use the mega fuse but think I will go with the circuit breakers s I don't want to have to stuff around with fuses, is there any reason i cannot connect one end of the circuit breaker direct to the battery or should i mount it seperately. Next thing is to rig up a decent crimping tool for the joints or buy a cheapie off eBay
            Cheers

A circuit breaker at each battery end will suffice - takes care should there be any short between the positive battery terminal and the wire to the anderson plug (either line - car piece or trailer piece).

Solder the wires into the male receivers supplied with the anderson plugs - no need to crimp. Use auto connectors for battery terminals and circuit breakers and solder the wires into these. That way you'll know they won't rattle loose.

You don't say what sort of Prado you have but if it's a D-4D you might like to consider the diode fuse mod in the alternator sense line to up the alternator charging voltage. This is very simple to fit and will especially help with charging the gel battery in the camper.( even with thick cables you're going to get a bit of voltage drop there ). There's a thread somewhere in the 120 electrical section and they can be bought off e-bay for less than $20.
                Cheers, Wayne
