  • When is the time to change all cooling / heater hoses???

    Hello again!

Im in the situation where my 1kzte has clocked up the big 200 on the clock.... (and still going strong mind you)

In the process of giving it a 'birthday' I have found my radiator fully clogged up with mud, grass seeds and all the nasties consistent with future cooling problems.

This not a problem for me, to pull the radiator out and give it a clean then flush the system out is really a piece of cake.

But being the anal car owner that I am, I am considering replacing all the cooling hoses, even though they seem ok, at a cost of about $300.

My two minds tell me, do it now and I should be able to keep her cool for another 200, and my other mind is telling me, dont wasted the money fool!!!

I know it would be good to install new ones and have the old hoses as spares for big trips... But my question is...

Has anyone actually had genuine Toyota hoses actually blow on them???? If so... which ones???

    Cheers once again.

Re: When is the time to change all cooling / heater hoses???

Yes samo & kav, thats what Im thinking too.

You can bet your bottom dollar something will happen and I will be kicking myself.

I have all the hoses at home, bar 1, as toyota made a boo boo with the part number but I will get that changed over this week.
Another thing I have worked out is about the coolant. Toyota asked me if I wanted the concentrate or the pre mixed. I got the premixed thinking it would save me time but after a search here on PP I found out that when you flush the system with clean water, the full amount of water never comes out of the block.
About 3 or 4 ltrs stays behind in all of the heater and other bits that cant simply drain away through gravity.
Due to this I am going to swap the pre mixed over for the concentrate. At least this way I know the correct amount of coolant is in the system, just having the need to top it up with wtaer until its full.
Seeing how there is only 12 or so ltrs in the cooling system, I figured pouring 8 or 9 of premixed on top of 4 ltrs of water would make the coolant to dilute.

Concentrate is the go for a flush, Premixed is the go for a top up.

        Good on yas and cheers.

Are there any traps with the 1kz when refilling (known air traps)?

Just reffering to my Max Ellery's Prado Manual it says...

"Fill the radiator coolant tank to MIN mark, Turn your heater on to the HOT setting, run the engine to get it hot enough to open the thermostat which purges the air from the system. Fill the coolant tank to the FULL/MAX level and replace the cap"

You will know the thermostat has opened as thats when the coolant level should drop.

I dont think there is much more to it.... maybe just check it a few times over the following days to mach sure its all good i guess..
