    KZJ v KDJ - D4D

    realistically what is the real difference between these 2 engines?

    I understand the KZJ is the older with a 96KW V a D4D @ 127Kw output but is their a real difference?

    If a KZJ is chipped up to 127KW is there so much difference, not being a full specs man, is the D4D a totally or radically
    new / different engine in design & reliability?

    Im looking maybe @ a TD with low kms and it seems the KZJ can be bought a few years & $4000 - 6 - 7000K cheaper in some cases.Im really struggling with this issue, so any pointers or comments would be appreciated.

    The KZ is a SOHC engine, 8 valves and indirect injection.

    The D4D is DOHC, 16 valves with common rail injection and varible vane turbo.

    A D4D will return around 20% better economy.

    You can easily up the output on a KZ to match or even exceed a stock D4D, however the D4D generally remains a better real world drive as it has a very flat torque curve and is a little more refined in the NVH area. The KZ's torque curve tends to be a little more peaky and drop off rather suddenly higher in the rev range.

    A chipped KZ might get 120kw, but a chipped D4D will get 150kw and still return better fuel economy than the KZ.

    The KZ is considered a little more bush friendly; less to go wrong, will tolerate suspect fuel better and is generally easier for the average DIYer to work on/repair/fault find. This is just a sum of it's age though, it just an old engine design that can trace it's roots back to the 80's with very little change. It's considered a slug by modern standards and is very truck like to drive.

    The D4D is a modern wizz bang common railer with all the bells and whistles, refined, smooth, free reving and almost drives much like a petrol engine. It even shows a good turn of speed if you ring it's neck. It's more complicated and repairs/fault finding is beyond most DIYers and even a lot of workshops. Some components can be VERY expensive to repair...with the likes of injectors, turbos and injectors pumps costing it the several thousands per component.
    Like most common rail engines; D4D's hate bad fuel and poor servicing.

    Consider a v6 if you can't stretch the money to a D4D. A carefully driven V6 will return better fuel economy than a thrashed KZ and has twice the power.

        You will also find that the gear box has an extra gear on the KDJ motor. The auto is a 5 speed and the manual a 6 speed. The KZJ had 4 on the auto and 5 on the manual. I have an auto KZJ and the extra gear would be a fantastic.
