  • 1 KZ TE Engine noise left side

Hi, I am new to posting in this forum although I have been an avid reader since purchasing my 2005 1 KZ GX prado.

At present I am pulling my hair out with a noise coming from the engine bay and am hoping that someone has some answers to help me. I have searched forum topics both here and all over the world and have thought for a couple of times "that must be it"! to only be disappointed. As the vehicle is primarily for exploring this wide brown land it is imperitive that the vehicle is reliable and i trust it 100% when in the middle of nowhere. At the moment the trust isn't there.

    Ok so problemo descriptiano......

A whirring type noise coming from the left had side of the motor over the injector pump area. I can't distinguish if it is coming from just in front of the pump, underneath or from the pump but it is definitely in that area. It kind of sounds like a unlubricated seal or a faulty vaccum operated valve with a buzzing/whirring kind of sound. It could be mistaken for a squeaky belt. The noise is intermittant at start up with a cold motor and appears to get louder when the engine has warmed after 2 min or so. Sometimes when it is warm it goes quiet for a few seconds but that's it. And you can really notice it on shut down when it sounds like unlubricated rubber right to the end of the last rev of the motor. So definitely in time with the speed of the motor. It's almost even a vibration noise.

At first I though fan belts, so replaced and tensioned these correctly - NO WIN

Then fan belt idler pulleys? Nope

Then I thought mmmmm, timing belt?? or idler puller. As the vehicle is tip top nick, serviced by toyota until I bought it and only 105,000 on the clock. I though this was doubtful, but I decided to changed the timing belt, related seals and idler pulley. Still no joy!

Then I found some info on another forum about the fuel line return valve and a small spring that loses tension and creates a harmonic sound. Fix apparently is to pull the spring out and stretch it out a bit to reinvigorate the tension. I though this sounded plausible and everything seemed to point to this type of sound and solution. So out to the shed. STILL NO JOY!!!!!

So here I am finally posting a topic to seek some help! After this I will have to post some details about my rig build up etc to help others too. Something I've been meaning to do, as this is one of the most useful sites I have found on the internet about anything.

So Cheers in advance and I'll have to pull anywone with some leads on this prob a nice cold "cyber" beer!

No doesn't change with steering. I forgot to mention that I checked this also. So I don't think it is the steering pump. Cheers

Thanks Mick, not sure what you mean by the vacuum pump? Is this associated with the injector pump?

The vaccuum pump creates vaccuum for your brakes (assistance). Follow the large hose that goes into your brake booster (your brake master cylinder mounts to it) back to its source.

Cheers, I'll check this out. I would have presumed this to be on the right side of the motor feeding the booster. Definitely worth a suss, as it could sound like a vacuum pump or plunger type noise.

Vaccum pump is at front of engine, below the level of the injector pump. It's gear driven and is a vane style pump.

Re: 1 KZ TE Engine noise left side

Thanks for the advice on the Vacuum pump, although I am 99% uncertain that the noise is coming from hear.

I believe and have others listen including my local toyota mechanic, that the noise is coming from directly above the injector pump. Therefore this is suggesting something in the injector pump.

The motor is still running perfectly, although it does chew more juice than I had hoped after upgrading from a 2.8 D 4 runner with aftermarket turbo. I average almost 16l/100km on a recent simpson trip with a very light foot and light vehicle not towing. I was not impressed.

I have since seen a slight improvement getting 13-14 L/100 around town, but nowhere where I would have expected after seeing 9-10L/100 with the 4 runner. So I am not sure that this has anything to do with the noise?

So I am still wondering whether there is a possiblility there are bearings or something in the injector pump that could make this noise. Perhaps something to do with the distributor head of the pump? I do not want to spend $1500 to $2000 on replacing the pump to find the noise still there.

                  Cheers

If this is just for the crossing then it's pretty good.

                      getting 13-14 L/100 around town

This isn't unusual if it’s an auto with all the usual modifications (tyres, lift, roof rack etc etc) Also remember the Prado is heavier than a 4 Runner by a substantial amount so not really comparing apples with apples.

This was the average for a round trip to and from Adelaide. And the vehicle is manual, lift yes, roof rack yes (very low profile), 265 70 A/Ts, and very light - no draws etc 2 people and even no rear seats. So I am not super satisfied with this fuel consumption.

Toyota didn't use a stethoscope, but I did have it listened to by a local diesel mechanic - and he wasn't sure. Although when I do the long screw driver to the ear trick I can hear a high pitch whining from the injector pump as compared to listening to "normal" engine noise anywhere else in the vicinity.

I think that I will trek down to MTQ in Regency Park (adelaide) and get them to have a listen.

It would also be interesting to hear another 1kz to compare.

                        Cheers

Thanks mate, I did already try this! I was a little excited when I found this forum - and then not so happy when I discovered this did not fix the problem!

I actually even tried running the motor for a short period without the non return valve and spring to see if it was a faulty valve - but noise still there!

                            Cheers

Thanks for your reply "##########". Definitely no fuel leaking into the oil/sump. I am still not convinced that it is the vacuum or steering pump, although these sound relatively easy to eliminate.

Doesn't the injector pump have bearings? When I listen to the pump through a long screw driver it has a high pitch squeal remanicent of the noise without the screw driver.

Although I hope that you are right and it is either the steering or vacuum pump.

                              Cheers

If it was the injector pump, eg., rotor, plunger etc., you would have a no start situation, rough idle, higher or lower idle, black smoke, etc.. Check that your oil is not rising, main seal, this allows for diesel to leak into the sump, usually pumps that have done more than 300,000 to 500,000 kms. This will not be your problem, extra fuel consumption will be because you need to replace your injectors (should be done every 100,000 kms). My advise, do your glow plugs at the same time. Vacuum pump one bearing, steering pump one bearing, they squeal like a pig when they go.
