  • Spring / shock combo suggestions for KZJ95

Hi Just wondering if anyone has fitted after market springs and shocks to their 90 series Prado and what they handle like. I dont want to raise mine (maybe just 20-25mm) as its my daily driver and dont really use it much off road (I have a Pajero for the tuff stuff)
I am after a decent shock/spring combination cause at the moment its a bit floaty on the road at speed, and shocking on a rough track. The previous owner had Munroe shocks fitted to the rear which are useless. Repco have Maxitrac combinations at a decent price but the springs are listed as 45mm lift which I am not keen on as I wouldnt fit into my garage with the roof racks on. Also Cobra make some standard heavy duty coils, anyone tryed these.
I Have a set of heavy duty King's in my Pajero which I am happy with. Anyone put these on a Prado?
Anyone had any experience with a decent shock/spring combination?
    Cheers

Old Man Emu make 4 spring/Shock combos for the 95 series. Heavy Duty 2" lift, Medium 2" lift, Heavy Duty no lift and Medium no lift. While I have not personally used them, there are plenty of users here that have that can give feed back for OME.

Happy to be corrected for any of the above

Hi Fellas. My KZJ95R had Kings on when i brought it - were stuffed at around 160k and riding on bump stops (thought some dork had lowered it initially). Fitted Dobi's. I am now over them - simply too hard riding. Ride height is great and truck looks good but unless fully loaded or towing a heavy trailer, bloody uncomfortable. Cheers, Derb.

Well I am going to order new rear springs next week, I have decided on Kings 30mm lift non heavy duty as I dont carry loads of tow anything heavy. Will see how they go and replace rear shocks, front springs and shocks at a bit latter date.

I went another direction. Have used KYB shocks before and found then good, so gave KYB Aus a call to talk to a tech. Got put onto the design engineer who just happens to own a 90 series. He used his Prado as the test bed to come up with the shock rates, so you can be pretty sure they have had a bit more testing than just a computer simulation. From the sound of his setup his Prado does a bit more than taking the kids to school The Skorched 4's are matched in length and rate to King springs 40mm raised. On most vehicles this will get you back pretty close to original height. I went with his advice because his setup was pretty close to mine; heavy duty raised front Kings due bullbar/winch/dual battery/ diesel, and raised normal rear with polyairs to keep a reasonable ride when empty with load carrying capability. So far, so good but will know more after midyear trip. About $1000 all up with the airbags.

i think it is a bit blind saying that they have done more testing on there shocks than just computer simulation.
Most manufacturers do this, it is only the cheap brands that don't do this as they are made to a cost and testing is not part of the budget.
KYB are the manufacturers of the original equipment shocks for Toyota/Daihatsu.
You are much better off getting EFS, or OME. The amount of time and money spent on developing and testing these shocks is amazing.

Well the new Kings and KYB Scorched 4s for the rear turned up today so I fitted them this evening after work, took me about half an hour, heaps easier than when I did my Pajero last year.
I got exactly 30mm lift as was stated by the spring suppliers. On the drive home 20kms of open road driving I was well impressed no wallowing anymore, corners better and no hard jarring. Going to do the fronts next month when funds allow,

A bit nose down at the moment, will be fixed when I do the fronts next month

So their advertising claims... I thought that most shocks came out of only a handful of factories around the world eg Cofap, Monroe, etc. A lot of these shocks bear striking resemblance to other brands, so I assume they are (maybe) simply revalved to suit the vendors requirements/pricepoint, coz there isn't much else you can do in a shock tube (unless you can buy the TDT patent). It would not surprise me if computer simulation is the basis of the design of most shocks. If they CAD engineer modern jets and predict pretty precisely how they will perform and fly, then a simple shockie would be a doddle! I see posts all over the net that people weren't happy with this shock or that; I saw the inside of a Monroe years ago and it was better built than the cut open Koni next to it. I have even seen a Bilstein disappear in a cloud of oil and smoke! Unless you mortgage the house and buy a set of custom Penske's or something, I reckon they are much of a muchness. Time will tell whether the KYB's go the distance. I look at it this way: I got to talk to the ENGINEER (not the marketing dept.) of KYB Aus who designed the shocks to suit HIS Prado. Has anyone spoken to the engineer that put together OME/EFS/etc about the test results on their 90 series Prado fitted with the identical dual battery/winch/rear storage to yours? Often I'll try something new rather than just follow the flock

Half an hour  You Legend! How did you get the upper shock nuts off/on so quick? What's the secret? Are the conical rubber bump stops still in the top spring mount, it's hard to see in the photo

The previous shocks were replaced only a couple of years ago so the threads were not rusty, I managed to get a 3/8 drive 14mm socket in there on a swivel head ratchet so was easy as to get at the top nuts, and my truck being a Jap Import doesn't have a sub fuel tank so access was easier. And yes I am a legend

Your right in saying there are only a few manufacturers of shocks around the world, Cofap, manufacture the EFS brand, but that is all they have to do with it, EFS do all the testing, infact when they do the testing, the shock is completely different, as it is able to be pulled apart and have different valve, shims, shafts, oils used in them, they get put onto machines and punished for the equivelant of 100000ks of unsealed road driving, if the shock is suitable, they then put them onto a test vehicle, this vehicle then has computers and other sensors connected to the shock, they test for temp, rebound, compression, control, ect, they test different valving of the shocks, infact EFS are the only shock on the market with adaptive valving, this lets the shock become soft at low movement speeds and stiffens up at higher speeds, this will give you good flex and comfort when off road and good stability on the road, my vehicle was part of these tests, and I can vouch for the time and effort and sweat, (sometimes blood...lol) put into these shocks.

Arch to bottom of rim; front height went from 720 to 770mm, so the 40mm claim from Kings seems correct (loaded with steel bar. winch, dual batts). Rear came up by same amount, front has settled to 755mm.
