  • Safari Snorkel - Performance Benefit or Not

    Hello PP Regulars,
This is my first post, so forgive me if the question seems basic or has been previously covered.

I'm considering fitting a snorkel to my '09 D4D. Water crossings are only occasional, but better to be prepared. I've heard that a snorkel also improves performance/economy. Is this correct. I was going down the path of a 'Safari' snorkel. Are there any problems with that or should I be looking at a Toyota genuine snorkel. Any advantage in going genuine.

    Feedback gratefully received.

    Oscar.

you may see a tiny benifit in performance, fuel economy wont change, you will also get a slight induction noise from the snorkel when window is down, but the main benifit is not getting a gutful of water in the engine, whether you go genuine or safari or air-tech is up to you just look at the price, i like the look of the airtech as it sits up agaimst the pillar and sint really visable from the drivers seat. cheers samo

Re: Safari Snorkel - Performance Benefit or Not

Been discussed before on here - a search will reveal much info.
But I wouldn't fit one just to get performance benefits - I haven't noticed any.
Raised air intake = less dust, maybe.
Protection on river crossings = definitely.
No problems with Safari product itself - there's been more problems due to incorrect/poor fitting so make sure you use a reputable fitter.
      Cheers, Wayne

I agree, no performance improvement, but better protection (water, dust).

I also agree, any improvement in performance or economy would be so slight that you wouldn't notice any difference. If you are going to do water crossings it is money well spent, even shallow water crossings without a snorkel can make the palms sweaty hoping that you dont get a guts full of water, especially with a diesel as water in motor = buy a new motor.

I dont believe that Toyota do a snorkel for the Prado, I have had 2 Prados both with safari's no problems at all. even on deep water crossings like in the picture below.

          Cheers Andrew

Re: Safari Snorkel - Performance Benefit or Not

            Men,
Thanks for the speedy replies and information. Safari snorkel it is ... water in engine it is not.

(air - tech is only slightly cheaper).

            Oscar.
