  • D4D Engine Corrosion

    Hi

I am new here so apologies if I have created this in the wrong area. I purchased a 150 GXL D4D in late November last year.

Yesterday I popped the bonnet for only the second time and was pretty disappointed to see significant surface rust. I will try and post a picture below:

The car has not been anywhere near salt water and has not even been off road yet.

Is this normal (it is my first prado)? It sure doesn't seem right for such a new car.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

Don't stress.... that's your exhaust manifold, it's made from cast iron and will look like this on almost every car on the road. It's the nature of this material and is only skin deep.

On a lot of other makes and models it's covered with a heat shield so mostly goes un-noticed.

Yes it is the exhaust manifold, and yes, it does rust....but my 150 d4d is almost the same age and it doesn't look like that (yet)....I have done over 5,000km, (lots of highway driving), so it may be getting more use (and thus hot more often, and thus not rusting?).... but there is nothing you can do about it to prevent it rusting, as its probably the hottest external part of the engine, and virtually anything (short of Space Shuttle Tile material) you put on it would burn, smoke, stink...etc..... Hopefully it is nothing to worry about.
