  • IPF Clear Cover Damage

    Hi All
After our 2010 Trip To The Tip, the IPF spot lights where looking a bit worst for wear.
Not very surprising after all the corrugations we encountered and the vibration of the Sovereign bull bar prior to the mount upgrade done recently.
This also resulted in the demise of a couple of UHF antenna whips.
The lights performed faultlessly and where essential for the many night time km we travelled.
It seems the clear covers on the IPF lights have chaffed the dark outer ring.

While the clamping arm with its folded clear rubber has rubbed the main body of the light housing through to the metal.

On removal from the bar it was clear that the light bodies would need a clean up.

This also lead me to think what the internals would be like, and this is what I found.

You are looking at the backing plate that the swivel mount is riveted to, its adjacent to the drain hole so one would expect moister to have been around this area.

As you can see this is the rear of the reflector housing showing its spring clips that hold it in place, within the dark outer ring.

Once the two screws are removed from the dark outer ring all is revealed.
Allowing you to remove the spring clips carefully with pliers to release the glass reflector housing.

Using a mini precision screw driver, the tabs inside the internal plug can be released from the plug to allow the wires to pass through the light body, with its rubber grommet. I then also removed the top rubber plug to prepare for the clean up.

    Re: IPF Clear Cover Damage

    CONTINUED:
The solution: After giving both the lights a thorough clean I consulted my mate at ARB to ask if he had any clues.
As it turned out on his (ARB's) vehicle, the clear covers where having the same chaffing effect on the IPF light body.
Old Mate suggested a Powder Coater that I could try.
I also payed a visit to our panel shop to ask for his point of view. Craig said that the lights would have to be gently blasted and zinc primed before coating, but for him it would be to fiddly. This I could understand and appreciated his honesty, however he pointed over the rear of his property to a flue that belonged to a Powder Coating company that he recommended.
So once again I was off on the trail of a solution.
After meeting Kim and seeing the finished products in his show room I was confident that I had come to the right place.
Pictures of stock cars and a 4wd in the driveway told me this guy likes his vehicles.
Kim went to the trouble of colour matching the original IPF colours very well even with the metallic fleck.
I explained my concern of the moisture holding under the backing plate inside the light body and where the swivel mount stainless meets the outside of the metal regarding future corrosion.
Kim told me that he would blast the metal to remove the rust and old powder coating and zinc prime the light bodies before final coating.
He masked the mounting bolt and swivel, except where the stainless meets the body as to seal between the two parts.

I am very happy with the finished product and the colour.

All the crappy bits cleaned up nicely.

Assembly of the lights is simply the reverse of dis assembly, watch those spring clips though.

Mount sealed with zinc and Powder coating.

Planning to polish the Sovereign Bull bar before refitting the IPF's, much easier with out them on.
    Cheers Troy

          Re: IPF Clear Cover Damage

Troy, I have the same clear covers on the IPFs and there is paint scuffing around the silicon grips on mine but no rusting. At this point in time I'm not looking at doing this but curious as to the price?

            G'day Schaffer
I am not sure what to do about the covers Nick.
If anybody has a cure for the scuffing other than leaving the covers off I would be all ears.
Seems that they are a trap for abbrasive dust etc. But do protect the lens.
The cost of the refurb was $100. Maybe a little steep, but to blast, zinc prime and powder coat the six parts with a good finish I'll accept.
            Cheers Troy

Don't have a solution but I'm not particularly phased by the scuffing.
