  • Prado 150 D4D Oil change

My prado 150 is about to reach 5000klm & I wanted to do a oil change myself. I've done it many times before in other cars but never one that has the filter upside down.

I had a bit of a search & couldn't find any step by step or tips. Appreciate any advice. If not I will try work it out & post what I had to do.

Re: Prado 150 D4D Oil change

Under the filter there is a catch tray. It has a drain tube that goes under the car near the sump drain. So, before you spin it off, make sure you have a catch tray under the car. Undo it slowly and let it drain, then spin off. Make sure no oil drips onto the starter motor, if it does clean it up. It can get into the motor and stuff it up. Apart from that its just a standard oil change.

Get yourself a new sump plug washer.

But... doesn't it void the warranty?? I thought all services had to be done by a qualified mechanic.

Get the toyota sst for removing the oil filter as it makes it so much easier. It is about $38, gaskets $1.50 and filters $15. I just changed the oil in mine (25k) and used penrite hpr 5 diesel. If u got the entertainment book there is a 20% off voucher for autobarn which helps with the cost.

Re: Prado 150 D4D Oil change

I have a 150 D4D GXL Manual. Approx 5,000 km now, so here we go with an "extra" oil change....Checklist: Toyota Oil Filter wrench (Product code 0922807501 = $32.72), toyota oil filer (product code 90915YZZD2 = $18.18), Toyota Diesel Oil 15W40 CH4 (product code 0888382306 = $72 for two 5l containers). Of interest, the toyota service tech said Toyota Diesel Oil is actually just re-packaged castrol GTX 15w40.
Now, after having a look into the engine bay for a few minutes, (whilst standing on a step ladder), I still can't find the oil filter from above....lets get underneath and see what I can see....I'm not used to working on a "real" 4wd for change...
I must say however, I love my prado....

          :?
Can anyone help please? Do I need to remove a sump guard?

Re: Prado 150 D4D Oil change

ok, I found the sump plug. Past experience has me a little paranoid. Back in 1979 I did a service on my shiny TD Gemini....in my haste and inexperience I accidentally removed the gear box drain plug instead of the engine sump plug (they are quite close together)....luckily the gear oil has a distinctive smell about it...well no harm done, and the Gemini got an early gear box oil change, but I won't ever fall for the potentially costly mistake of removing the wrong drain plug again. Anyway...I found the sump plug after I removed the small oval "inspection" plate in the underbody sump guard (two 12mm bolts), this exposed the 14mm sump plug. Drained the sump first, then loosened the oil filer (to avoid spillage)...the oil filter is virtually upright and the toyota special service tool used to remove the oil filter makes it quite easy to remove....I used a socket wrench with an extension (but no socket as the extension fits directly into the oil filter removal tool). So far I have used 6.5 litres of oil to getto the mark on the dip stick, but will run the engine and then let it cool and check again in the morning....anyway, all good...like others I have changed oil and filters many times on other cars, but never on a Prado.....I virtually needed a step ladder to reach into the engine bay, and I didn't need to jack up the front of the car or use ramps or pit, I just crawled right under...( when I eventually lift the suspension we will virtually be able to camp under the car and forget the camper...oh the clearance...
Spoke with Toyota Dealer....no problems with warranty provided I use all correct parts and oils ( I checked and double checked oil and filter...they suggested I keep receipts to prove the filter and oil was correct)...however, as one would expect to be the case, they said should the oil leak out through an incorrectly fitted sump plug or oil filter, and if I then damage the motor, then this is not covered under warranty. I will be checking both the filter and the sump plug for leaks in the morning and again after a drive..as usual after any service. BTW, the old oil was as black as charcoal...I know, its my first diesel, and diesels are supposed to have oil that goes black quickly, and black oil does not necessarily mean its old and useless oil...but anyway, I'm going to try and do the oil/filter change every 5,000km.

Re: Prado 150 D4D Oil change

If you poured in 6.5 to get it to the full mark, you'll likely need another 500mL after you start it. The oil level in the 1kdftv is meant to be checked after running the engine to operating temperature (to fill oil galleries with oil), shutting down then checking after a few minutes. You'll get a higher reading on the dipstick if you leave it overnight to drain down.

Thanks for the advice sir, will do.

Also, someone else suggested "priming" the oil filter with some new engine oil, by letting a cup full or so soak into the oil filter element for a few minutes prior to installing it quickly (so as to avoid a mess)....any thoughts/comments?

I was told by Toyota, that their oil is made by Caltex? which has confused me.

Just had my first oil change at 4800 kms. Was told by my mechanic that the 5000km change will be un neccessary and will do it at 10000km intervals as stated in the service book in the future.
He said it is because Toyota use a high quality synthetic oil and it is designed to last 10000km not 5000.

My Local Toyota Dealer sells an oil change kit for diesel 150 for about $70. Has Genuine Oil Filter, Sump plug gasket, 5l of "Toyota" Diesel oil (this wont be enough) and windcreen washer additive. I think this is how I'll do my 5000Km changes.
My favorite mechanic advises also to check the drain around the oil filter is not blocked prior to loosening filter as they can block if you've been offroad.
My biggest issue is getting a reliable level on the dip stick. Whether the car has been standing 10 mins or overnight I remove the dipstick, wipe it reinstall it and remove to read and there is no clear level. It kind of smears down the side of the stick above the expected level. When the oil is new it is hard to be confident of the actual level. Any tips or tricks??
                          Best Regards

Toyota OEM oil in Australia is Caltex. Dealers use who ever they get the best deal with. It is more than just oil. Can include eqpuipment, technical support loans etc. CF is a pretty old specification. Doubt if you would get just a CF. CI4 is the latest and is backward compatible. Any quality brand oil with the specs will do the job.

Personally I use Mobil Delvac 1. Costs a bit but is the goods. Full Group 4 synthetic and honestly changing every 10k is over kill but so be it.
Transport companies get over 10 times that with testing and filter changes.

                            Regards

I hate to revive an old thread (not that this thread is particularly old) but... I was looking under the bonnet today, and the filter intrigues me.

In the first post, its mentioned that the filter is upside down... mine is the right way up? It does have the catch tray/drain around its mount though.

Am I missing something when the OP says its upside down?

secondly... my filter is tiny, I've seen ride on lawn mowers with bigger?
