  • White/Grey Smoke from 2007 D4D

    Hi,

Have got a 2007 GXL D4D with 160K's (Love the vehicle). Had it from new and serviced at Toyota. On start up (after sitting for a few hours or o/night) I get a cloud of white/grey smoke that turns the surrounding area into a smog zone such that it looks like a bad day in Beijing. Once engine has warmed up, doesnt seem to emit the smoke. Have noticed no change in performance or rough running (havent checked fuel consumption).

I have had the vehicle in at toyota 4 times issue still not fixed.

Response from toyota was that the feedback values on the injectors were slightly high and I will need to change the injectors cost $4k. Other possibility was some sort of blockage/carbon build up on intake that was preventing full combustion at start up. They said they were not really sure.

Can anyone add some light to this issue. I really don't have full confidnece in toyota and do not want to just keep paying to have components "fixed" until a solution is accidently stumbled upon.

    Regards

    Greg

    any engine oil consumption?

normally white/grey smoke means oil which could mean two things. Piston rings or Turbo seal...if it's either of these two you'd pray to father christmas it was the turbo seal

At this stage have not noticed any oil consumption. Will keep a close eye on it though.....

Do you know what the typical symptoms for shot injectors on a D4D are?

        white/grey is in-complete fuel burn.
you might want to check out your intake manifold.

it may give you an idea of what to look for and how easy it is to check.
how many KM's on your rig, and have you checked/replaced your air filter?

If the smoke emission is very high at start up, this is often caused by faulty valve stem seals. White smoke can be caused by brake fluid through faulty power brake diaphragm. Is your brake fluid level constant?

Agree with damonat - white smoke - it may not be smoke but unburnt diesel.
            Could be a timing issue.

              possible causes;

leaky injector overnight will give off this smoke.
does it start a bit knocky then the smoke starts, or a little slow then fast to turn over?

              timing out (unlikely but possible).

sensor giving incorrect info to ECU.

              restricted air intake.

              fuel pressure to high (unlikely).

leaking valve stem seal will give out blue smoke.

As damonat said its a fuel issue. Probably injector dribble overnight. It pools in the combustion chamber and cant burn correctly on start up but burns away.

Have seen a MACK with this bend a conrod in the morning

                  Greg,
I had a similar issue with my D4D, only was blowing smoke for 1 - 2 mins on start-up then was fine. I did take it to Toyota and they indicated it was a seal in the Turbo and replace the whole Turbo under warranty. It still was blowing smoke for a week after the new turbo so I rang Toyota to take it back, unfortunately it was over XMas 2009 and they weren't open until nid January but did tell me it as safe to drive. The engine siezed at 99,250km over xmas new year period and toyota relpaced the engine (short engine)under warranty. The problem that Toyota admitted to was a leaking injector, which was what I had suggested it was 2 months prior. Not unhappy because I did get a new turbo and short engine at 99,000 km under warranty. So be careful with what Toyota tell you it is.

                  Regards

                    Greg,
I'm currently going through this with my 07 D4D. Performance was down; sluggish up hills and whilst towing and it had a slight vibration/miss at idle. I saw a big plume of white/blue smoke coming out exhaust on start up and I knew something was definately amiss. Injectors have been checked on a diagnostic tool and I found that the 2nd injector has packed it in causing a dribble rather than a nice even spray. IMO, I'd get this looked at asap before your motor costs you a small fortune.

So far it is $1000 and counting. There goes the money for Steinbauer.....

                      Ok,

Have just had 4 new Denso injectors installed ($3300). 2 had significant bypass. Problem has gone away. No more smoke on start up and vehicle is running a lot smoother. Happy with the outcome, very dissappointed with Toyota. Hopefully many more years before I have any further issues.

                      cheers

                        D4D smoke on start up

                        Hi All
I had the same problem with the white smoke on start up.I have replaced the injector seals with the upgraded Aluminium seals(not copper)with new orings two of which were blown out due to copper washers bypassing and problem is no cured.Possibly part of the reason for the D4D rattle as it has reduced the knock slightly.Anyway a few hours work and NO smoke on start up
                        I 'm happy .

I have recently noticed some white smoke on start up, sometimes in the morning but also throughout the day when it has been standing for a while. I am off the Adelaide in a week and would like to get it looked at. Can anyone suggest a reputable and reliable dealer/specialist to take it to.

                          Thanks

Well I took the vehicle to a Toyota dealer who said I had one out of range injector but had reprogrammed the ecu and announced all was well. They apparently couldn't detect any smoke. Obviously they weren't looking too hard. I wasn't happy so I took the vehicle to Hi Tech Diesel in Adelaide and they discovered that the said injector was still out of range. I bit the bullet and had them all replaced and an additional fuel filter installed. They discovered when removing the injectors that one had a blown seal which was the cause of the smoking on startup. All fixed now and I feel a lot happier about the 3k drive back to Darwin. The $3k cost was a bit of a hit but better than a blown engine.

I had this happen to mine (2007) and i took it to my toyota dealer (Where i used to work as a mechanic) and it was a $629 fix. They replaced seals and little gaskets on each in injector and it has solved the problem. Hope this helps.
