  • Puff of White Smoke 2005 TD

    Hi Guy's,

I'm a new prado owner, I picked myself up a 2005 3Lt TD 4 speed Auto with 115,000 klms on the clock about two weeks ago.

I found the forum to be excellent with heaps and heaps of info. The info on here helped sway me from buying pajero to a Prado.

I have driven it everyday until last weekend when it stayed in the carport for the weekend. When I started it on Monday morning it truned over for a little longer (sec and a half) and when it kicked it had a big puff of white smoke from the exhust pipe.

Since then i've noticed that it does it if the engine is cold, for example from about 8 am today until 1pm today. I assume this is unburnt fuel but I'm not 100%. (it could of been doing this the whole time and I haddn't noticed).

I've done 1000 Klms so far since I got it and it drives excellently and pulls very well, I've averaged 13lts per 100 klms so far. From the 1000Klms about 100 were in hi range 4X4 and 50 klms in Low range in the brindys, about 600 klms were at 115 klms on the freeway and the rest around town.

From reading the other posts on the forum this seems a little high, what do you guys think? (Also I'm no lead foot)

Do any of you guys know what the go is with the smoke? is it a problem?

    Thanks John

I am no mechanic however..... When you start it from cold there is a warning light (looks like a coil of wire) that lights up when you turn on the ignition then goes out when the glow plugs have warmed up. You are meant to wait until the light goes out before turning the key all the way to crank it over. Maybe if you are not waiting that might create the puff of smoke.

Thanks wayne, na I know about the glow plug, but it did get me thinking so I tried turning the key onto the glow plug three times this morning to see if it was the glow plug not getting hot enough and it did seem to cut back the smoke by a fair bit.

I wonder if the glow plug is no good?

        white smoke is unburnt fuel.
        blue smoke is oil burning.
black smoke is rich running diesel.
white smoke at start-up is ok.
if you start noticing that it is taking longer and longer to start (when cold) then have injectors looked at.
with the km's you have you should be fine.
if you want to check out your glow plugs, just use a multi-meter with the connection bar removed.
since you have just purchased the vehicle, perhaps just check and drain the fuel filter for water, or just replace it.

          Cheers for the replies fellas.

Not such good news today, as I was pulling out of the work driveway last night the motor was a little louder than normal and then as I drove off there was a loud bang from under the bonnet and then the Prado sounded a lot like me great granddads tractor and was running a rough as.

I pulled back into work and had to call a tow truck to get it home.

Great time of year too, the Prado has to go back to Syd for Warranty work and that can't happen until the 5th of Jan. There goes the 2 nighter into the brindys over Xmas.

wow that's not good or the timing of it.
from reading your initial post again, i still can't workout what could have failed.
be interesting to hear what the dealer come back with.
is your vehicle still under there stat warranty?
