  • exhaust upgrade 1kz noise levels

    Hi.
I am considering upgrading the prado 2005 1kz, first with a exhaust then a egt gauge and chip later, I am looking at the Beaudesert exhausts which are 2 3/4 inch or the Taipan which is 3 inch. The beaudesert is $935.00 for steel plus delivery and the taipan is $1330.00 plus delivery.

Has anyone compared these 2 exhausts for noise levels as i dont want anything droning. the original is pretty quiet and i realise that there will be a different note i prefer the quieter of the two. The taipan is more $$ but is 3 inch and has a extra resonator that may reduce the noise??

Any hands on experience out there?

also are people generally installing a catalitic converter or not when upgrading the exhaust?/

    Thanks

There's no cat on a 1kz engined Prado.

I am looking at the Beaudesert exhausts which are 2 3/4 inch or the Taipan which is 3 inch.
Much of a muchness on the 1kz.... 2 3/4 will flow over 250kw so no issue on a 1kz!

but is 3 inch and has a extra resonator that may reduce the noise??
I suspect the extra resonator is either because the "Vortex" muffler they use combined with the larger pipe doesn't knock off enough db or they have some resonating noise to cancel out at certain rpm.

Both systems are good and do as they advertise. Possibly slighty better build quality with the Taipan but I'm splitting hairs.

I run a Beaudesert.... no issues, no drone

Bit the bullet and ordered a Taipan 3 inch exhaust, hopefully the old one comes off easilly however the nuts on to the turbo look well and truely rusted and stubborn.
Should arrive next wednesday, and will be a nice little job over xmas.

        Will post outcome once installed.

        Thanks

nuts on the turbo are a bugger, give them a wire brush start soaking them now with some penetrene or wd 40 or the like, this will make it a bit easier or if you have access to an oxy just heat the nut up and it will come off with some effort. cheers samo

            I run a 3" pacemaker on my 2004 1kz
It has no cat and has a resonator at the rear.
No druming but a nice brurrbble 8)
Photos - 3" exhausts and cat convertors
Price wise? let me know what you can get a fit yourself system for (PM me)

Re: exhaust upgrade 1kz noise levels

Well exhaust arrived xmas eve and is now installed.
I expected it to be louder than it was, in fact my initial thought when i started it was that it sounded the same. However after driving around on day one, it is slightly noisier than the factory exhaust, not by much. It is more noticable when you put the foot down, you can just faintly hear the whistle of the turbo if you listen carefully .

Overall i am very happy with the noise levels i am a fussy person and would say that the general prado diesel owner would not have any concern with the very slight noise increase .

The main reason i upgraded was to start a road to better perfomance without downgrading engine lifespan so this was the first logical step, I can report that the prado has definately more response through the range and it is noticeable.
I would guess at least 5% extra power and it just takes off much smoother under power.

My next step was to install a chip on medium setting, but i am surprised with the power increase the exhaust alone has provided i may reconsider if i need the chip.

The Taipan system was easy to install except for the rear rubber mount that they for some reason make 10mm larger hole spacing than the hangar bracket and advise you in the instructions to squeeze it with multigrips-- Yeah good luck with that, took me a hour trying to compress the heavy rubber block and get it on.

The only really difficult part is getting the old dump pipe off, presoaking the nuts 3 to 4 times over 4 hours before removing them is a good start, but they still would not budge, and you have to be very conservative on applying too much force. If you do you can snap the small 6mm studs off and that then entails the turbo removal.

I tried and reccommend a product that seemed a gimmick but worked extremely well, Its a freeze spay (like wd40) that you spray on rusted and jammed nuts, it freezes the nut and bolt and allow easier cracking off.
The nuts when removed are very cold like from a fridge and come off very easilly, in fact 2 of the 4 nuts came off with the studs as well and the nuts were loose and able to be hand removed, so the product works and is well reccomended.

So if anyone was worried about the extra noise ( like i was) , you dont need to be concerned and the extra performance will compensate 10 fold over.
              regards

              Jeff

Re: exhaust upgrade 1kz noise levels

Just a follow up, its been 2 weeks and i am thoroughly wrapped with the exhaust. It seems to have settled in and the turbo whistle is a bit more noticeable especially if the window is open, sounds cool!.
The noise level is slightly more, has a low grumble noise, Taipan state that it increases by 5DB, and i would say that that is about true.

The EGT temperatures are about 200-300 on constant driving and these increase to 300-400 on load ( full throttle on incline) , the highest egt i have been able to get is by driving from a low speed with full throttle up a hill in 3rd gear and revving it out, that got the EGT up to 500 degrees C.( dump pipe)

The power increase is fantastic given that there is no other mods, and i would guess my fuel economy is now better , due to the fact that i hardly touch the throttle to accelerate now as it just responds so much better, It always went well from 2nd or 3rd turning corners but it is a marked improvement now, i would say half plus gear is saved without any engine struggle.

There is a big circle turn on the freeway near us and i always dropped to third to go round, now it just idles around in fourth without any issue and easilly accelerates back to 100km/hr after the curve .

Will do a fuel economy check when i go on a trip. I usually get 12l/100km.

                Regards

Re: exhaust upgrade 1kz noise levels

We put the Tiapan on our 1KZ-TE. Waste of time. Noise drove us mad. Exhaust broke at the dump pipe in the Simpson. (only six months old). The DP chip was great after the remapping of the pedal %. The reason the exaust broke is due to no support for the pipe beside the gearbox. The pipe flexes and breakes. I welded the broken pipe and put a strap from the back of the t/case to the pipe, in front of the flex joint. When they replaced the pipe (warranty) they removed the brace. I fabricated a new one to stop the pipe from failing. On the drone, driving 2 weeks across the simpson we had nothing but headaces and wished we never installed the 3".
$1000 is a lot of cash for the exhaust with little gain. My thought is to spend your dollars on a chip and spend the rest on a good fridge.
Would like to try a chip on the D4D, but won't do the exhaust.

Hi Rusty, My exhaust came with a heavy bracket that bolts on to the gearbox and the dump pipe, it sounds like yours was missing this bracket. I know when i researched this that the beaudesert users were having this issue and the manufacturers have now included a bracket in their system also. Re the noise, I think the small note to the exhust is cool, its not loud and not noticeable from in the cabin with the windows up, slight noise when down, everyones different. I still state the performance improvement is a big bonus, its definately noticable on my truck.

                      Regards

Re: exhaust upgrade 1kz noise levels

Yes ours did come with the small bracket on the dump pipe to bell housing. The bracket i was referring to in at the back of the transfer case to the pipe just before the flex joint.
Re the noise: the tiapan was verry load in the cabin, enough to cause all of us even the kids to comment on the level.

If i can find the pics of the mount / bracket i will post.

                        Pic of rear muffler failure.

Bracket )before paint and weld. )

                        Cracked pipe (flange to dump).

The exhaust was well made and finished, fitted well but the steel quality and mounts let it down. (my opinion). Being a fitter and turner i would say the heat effected area needed heat treatment to reduce this type of failure.
