  • Diesel scarcity, refueling and myths

So I drove to the local Caltex servo tonight looking to fill up on Diesel only to find that there weren't any Diesel pumps :!: I must have missed it :?: I later drove to the local Shell servo, and read all their pump labels only to find that only ONE pump, out of 12 pumps offered, had diesel. I was just under 1/4 tank... and $152.45 later it was full. I suppose the good thing is I won't need to full up again for two weeks! Being my first diesel car, I never thought locating fuel for it would be that difficult! For those curious I had a tank average of 10.5lt/100km doing mostly suburban and freeway driving. the tank average rose after my two trips to ARB for suspension, bar and locker. I'm not sure if it's related as the extra weight is negligible but it probably is another factor. Anyway, I've got a couple of questions to put forth...

I know for a fact that approximately 30% to 40% of the pumps in rural town servos are diesel. This is probably due to most customers being farmers who run diesel vehicles. My question to you is, how scarce are diesel pumps in your area?

Also, while filling up tonight, I took twice as long as the sedan behind me to fill a full tank and was holding up the queue. Next question to you is, when do you fill up? flashing fuel light, 1/4 tank or 1/2 tank? I never fill up after the flashing fuel light turns on as I've been told the last bit of fuel has sediments etc that arent good for the engine (obviously). I've also been told that running the tank completely empty (I'd never do this) is not only bad for the engine (duh  ) but requires a lot of work to get the engine running again... as compared with a petrol engine, where you could just fill up and be on your way.

Would like to hear your opinions and thoughts

Re: Diesel scarcity, refueling and myths

In my area ( outer eastern suburbs Melbourne ) many servos have a separate area for trucks, with hi-flow pumps so I generally try to go to those.

You need to be careful of going into remote areas where the diesel can be dirty or have water in it. Your fuel filter can trap some of this, but there is a limit.
I take a small glass jar with me on remote trips. The first amount of diesel goes into that, and I then hold it up to the light and inspect it for water or dirt. Not foolproof but better than nothing.

There are some portable filter funnels available - I think I will get one for my next remote trip.
    Cheers, Wayne

      Hi William,
I had the same experience with the Caltex and Shell in my area. So i opted for the 7eleven nearby which has two diesel pumps, one high speed and one normal speed. I fill up the tank when the reading shows around 300kms to empty and use the high speed pump to fill it up.
      Thanks,

Ozwapet - Interesting tips there, thank you. Sometimes you don't have a choice if you're running low on fuel, I reckon the funnel filter is a great idea for those situations in remote areas. I tend to look for servos that are relatively busy, so I know the fuel turnover is high.

Melbo - I don't recall seeing a 7eleven in Point Cook? What's the diesel quality like? I've read up on some threads that rank servos by fuel quality and don't recall 7eleven being mentioned.

Mudboy - How do you identify a high speed pump? I can't say I've ever seen one.

Yes I fill up at a Woolworths caltex and they have a couple of pumps, one pump usually on the outside nearest the curb and has a bigger nozzle than he standard ones, always check to see what pumps trucks fill up at
They are much quicker especially when putting in 150 lt

Re: Diesel scarcity, refueling and myths

Hi Fellas. Here in NZ the servo's are fitting even more diesel pumps due to the higher numbers of new diesel cars/utes/vans being sold. Our diesel still $1-29 per vs. $1-90 per for petrol. Even with 4c per km road tax on top of the diesel it still works out cheaper. Nowadays you would have to be pretty unlucky to get a load of dodgy diesel. I have always run my vehicles from chocka block to orange warning lamp (still have 15 litres to go on warning lamp) and never had water or crap issues. Cars have pretty good fuel filters nowadays so just stick to the change schedule and you will be ok. If you are a little paranoid - fit an aftermarket pre-filter! Cheers, Derb.

That's odd, isn't Tuesday night / Wednesday morning suppose to be the cheapest for fuel? I filled up at Shell at 129.7 on Tuesday night...

I try not to let it get much under 1/2 as I believe you can get condensation build up in the tank which can lead to more water in the filter trap. This was true for the boat I owned so I assume it is the same for a car with large tanks. That said, going on a long trip and refilling when low (say just under 1/4) should still be ok as you are refilling staight away and not leaving the tank with a lot of air in it for a long time.

Interesting theory. I'm actually contemplating filling up on a half empty tank too.
