  • Bouncing Down The Tracks (Please Help)

Hey all, i need your help, i recently redone all the suspension in my prado with good gear, bilstein shocks and king springs. She rides so beautifully on the road now, but.
I was at landcruiser park and it has bad corrugations on the way in and through most of the tracks, and my car just can't handle them, it skips all over the place on the front, the dash is just about to fall off i think from the weekend it was shaking so hard. Its almost like something is loose, or worn in the steering cause i get feedback but it just doesn't feel like positive feedback its like its only half the feeling.
we primed up all the shocks properly so it can't be them and it can't be shock fade either cause on the sunday morning straight away leaving camp she was all over the shop.
I was in my mates 80 series and you didn't feel any of the bumps i feel
anyone got any suggestions about what it could be?
I'm thinking maybe steering rack or a loose mount somewhere or a couple of busted bushes in the control arms

    gav_vx_man,

The dash trying to jump away from the screen is a no cost option in the 90 Series....

Since it drives well on the road I doubt you have anything major wrong with the front end.
What tyre pressure were you running once you hit the corrugations ? Skipping around sounds like too high a pressure.
I find dropping 10 psi (to around 25-28 psi) when I hit the dirt makes a major difference, no skipping and less dash shake.

I must amend something there, i was running 18psi in the tires, and it really didn't make much difference on the way in when i was on 35 psi.
And also i must add the car runs fine on normal road, rough road she gets a little shaky, and also when you hit those stupid man hole covers and they are only recessed in a little bit getting onto an inch it goes through the car real bad, like the car bouces off it and lunges all over the road.
I also must need a wheel balance cause this is where it gets weird, i can feel in my legs the car shaking and the passenger seat shakes and i can see the bonnet shaking different to the bonnet, not real bad but not smooth like it should, yet i can hold the steering wheel with one finger and not feel any of it
      cheers all

My cousin is a mechanic and when he worked on a 90 series he found the steering rack mount bushes flogged out, might be worth a check.

I have had my car on the hoist lately and found that the steering rack bushes are flogged out, moving about 10 mm in total play, so thats one problem. Just wondering but has anyone been over the whole front end and changed all the bushes throughout the front end, just wondering how hard it could be

Re: Bouncing Down The Tracks (Please Help)

            I'm about to do this.
A arm bushes, rack bushes, inner and outer tie rod ends, upper and lower ball joints. The only thing not being done is the rack itself.

I'm just waiting on the A arm bushes from toyota and i'll be ready to make a start, just need to confirm a few technical points of the job.

For those interested Toyota quoted me ~$1500 for all the above work before parts. I am considering the convenience factor but as I have the tools, skills and a second car am thinking that maybe I should save the coin for something else.

Re: Bouncing Down The Tracks (Please Help)

              Thought I'd post an update

I've finally got all the work done to the front end of our prado and it's a different car to drive now. It doesn't wander , you steer and it turns, no clunks and noises and much smoother on the road to (haven't had it in the bush yet). In a minor way I had to relearn how to drive it as I'd gotten used to it's "looseness" and now that it's tight as a fishes bum it's different.

I ended up going with OEM bushes at the front and got them for a fairly good price from the local dealer due to buying a fair wad of parts from them in one hit. Ended up paying ~$560 for all 8 bushes.

One thing that I ran into while changing the bushes was that the camber/caster adjusting tubes (part 48409B in this picture)on the lower arm were frozen into the bush itself ending up in 2 needing to be cut off so it could all be changed. If you are getting the lower bushes replaced, budget for up to 4 adjuster tubes as well. I got myself 4 tubes and 4 nuts/plates (in the end I could have gotten away with not replacing these) and 4 bolts for ~$270.

I'd also suggest that if/when ever you get a wheel alignment ask the place to check to ensure the adjusters move in the bush, not to just take the readings and if they are right leave them along. I've had a couple of wheel alignments including 1 about 1000kms ago and I suspect they didn't (or didn't need to) adjust the camber/caster on on the 2 frozen ones so I was not aware of the problem.

So all up probably a bit over $1000 in parts for the front end but except for the sway bar D and link bushes (the next job), the suspension is pretty much brand new now and much better for it.

Re: Bouncing Down The Tracks (Please Help)

Hey all, cheers for your reply, i am acutally waiting for the parts to come through from toyota and my mates in the auto trade. We are changing everything, but we are just going to see on the day how the tie rod ends are and how the ball joints are as there isn't much play in them. so we are changing all the control arm bushes, doing the rack conversion to poly bushes and repacking all the ball and tie rod ends if they are in good nick
hoping my car will be like yours cause mine wanders all over the road now.
                cheers
