    Hi, I borrowed the neighbours dodgy trailer and it was fine for a few minutes, then I lost indicators, aircon and the onboard ARB compressor. Looked through fuses and as yet can't think of where it might be. (where is the fuse for the indicators anyway??) Then a new problem started - I stopped to check fuses etc and then battery wouldn't kick over to start. It hasn't been driven for about a week, so maybe the battery was a bit drained? but it did start straight up when I picked up the trailer... (lucky I have a second battery and a set of jumpers) Now the power windows are very slow and when they go, the radio can't cope and the reverse camera dims (like there is not enough juice) Ideas?????

    Sounds like something shorted out mate... Probably when the trailer was connected...

    Not to sound over the top - but if you have checked the rear left panel (where the jack is stored) for damaged relays and wiring, checked your fuses for blown ones in both the drivers foot well and engine bay fuse boxes and you are still having trouble - there may be a damaged cable due to overheating and insulation melting... If your accessories are dimming even with the trailer disconnect and everything seems like its low on juice then i can only susspect there is an earth fault in one of your supply cables.

    Finding this is however a difference matter...

    Have you been able to start the vehicle since?
    Are you still having issues with the accessories?
    Does your starter motor solenoid click when attempting to start (or silence)?

    Try removing individual fuses for non-important systems withint the car - such as illumination, lighting, windows, radio, compressors etc until (hopefully) you find the system that is causing the power drain... If the fault is on the supply side of the switching, then this could pull the voltages down for more import items...

    Without looking at it - i'm not sure where to go from this... ?

        Ok mate, its quite difficult to do this type of fault finding over the net, but I will offer what advise i can...
        Basically, for now you just need a multimeter and patience...

        One check i didn't mention would be to check the battery voltages at the 12v socket outlets and other locations - as these are fed from the accessories circuit... if you get less than 12v, then you'll know where to start looking... pull fuses as you go and recheck the accessory circuit (probably best point as the drives foot well fuse block) after each fuse is removed until the voltage returns to normal, then trace out the wires in the faulty circuit until the cause is found...

        Bear in mind that it may not be in the assecories circuit, it may just more noticable due to the systems on it...

          G'Day Fishnut and others, I had similar prob recently and the culprit is fuse" IG1 No 2" in the in dash fuse panel. It is the 10amp middle row 4 down.Mine blew when connecting a caravan.

            It was infact the IG1 No 2 fuse as you say - i'm not sure of what exactly it feeds (i'd need a circuit diagram to check - i don't have one) but somewhere on the circuit there seems to be the control for the exciter winding for the alternator. When this circuit failed, the alternator stopped producing voltage and subsequently stopped charging the battery. this in turn cause a gradual loss of battery power and that explains the dimming of illumination, and the radio fading out. End result - motor cutting out due to power loss. Car could be jump still be jump started...

            (Information represented above was obtained from Fishnut's fault finding in a PM - I was not involved).

            In the end a simple fix - seems strange how a wiring fault in a trailer would be able to cause such an important part of the cars electrical system to fail due to a blown fuse - ideally would have expected a different setup in the circuit design by Toyota to prevent that happening.

              Yeh just one little fuse feeds a lot of gear, it took m 6 fuses until I had resolved the short in the van which was mine not someone elses. I bet you didnt have a big supply of spare fuses either.

                yep, as Matty outlined, luckily it was a simple fix. The flat battery had me confused, but my 're-inforcement' (thanks Leachy) explained that the fuse probably has something to do with the alternator - that made sense.

                Was lucky - Having just driven from 17,000-odd km from Perth across the middle of Australia to Cape York and back, I had a collection of fuses to keep me going for weeks :mrgreen:

                  Me too boys,

                  My new $7000 enclosed bike trailer had $2.00 tail lights :x :x on it and every time I hooked it up - the fuse for the Auto gearbox lock out button blew......

                  solution was to read PP and find out who else had experienced the problem.. saved me a $$$$ trip to Toyota

                  and change the tail lights - :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

                    This is the second time I've lost my indicators and aircon but hazards stayed ok, even after checking every fuse I couldn't see any broken ones, just replaced the one you mentioned and tadaaaa it worked. I couldn't find in the manual anywhere which fuse was related to the indicators.

                    Saved me some heartache and looking like a dumb blonde when taking my car to an auto leccy.

                    Car is going in for a service in two weeks so will get them to check the wiring in the indicator stalk as it appears to blow when i flick my lights off too quick. (which I recall is what I did last time too)

                      Hey all,

                      Similar problem - this morning after 5 mins of driving my indicators, reversing lights (and reversing camera) all stopped working. Going to try the IG1 No 2 fuse at lunch, but any other suggestions?

                      It had a new reversing camera installed about 2 weeks ago after a tail end altercation. I figured my next step is to pull the tail gate apart and check that the wiring isn't shorting out in there somewhere, but before I go to that trouble any other suggestions for my lunch break?

                        Lunchtime fault finding:
                        It is IG1 No 2 BUT the fuse is blowing when I engage reverse. No 1 suspect = reversing camera.

                        Suggestions as to where to start looking for a short?
                        Should I just try a larger fuse to start with - perhaps a 15 or 20AMP?
                        Given it could be anywhere in the reversing circuit how do I identify where apart from doing a visual inspection of the whole circuit? Remember it could be anywhere from the fuse to the tail lights, camera, and behind the radio!

                          The fuse is there for your protection do not go larger. The only addition has been a camera so that doesn't justify additional current loading that a bigger fuse would provide. Take it to whoever installed the camera and ask them to check it out. Thre is either a problem with something they installed or something they have touched.

                          PS don't park anywhere you need to reverse out of until then!

                            hmmmm - looks like I need to disconnect power to the camera until I can get to the autoelec then...
                            I reckon I try the obvious points of weakness tonight - the connection to the reversing wire, connection to the radio, and pull the power on it if neither of these fix it.

                              Ok, so thorough check tonight and I could not find any wiring problems or a circuit on the reversing circuits causing a problem. Multimeter jumped from 0.6 amp in park to 3.8 in reverse with the camera on. But as soon as I put in a 10 amp fuse (and I tried 3) they blow. So either my multimeter is stuffed or I don't know what? For now a 20 amp fuse is keeping my indicators going. Given its only reverse the risk of damage is pretty low.
                              Any one give me any more tips?
                              I did learn that the IG1 no2 fuse is linked to the LEDs on the air con controls, sets off the engine warning light (reset by disconnecting your battery), kills your indicators but not your hazards and Kills your reversing lights.
