  • Tough Dog adjustable - Any Good???

I've been reserching my suspension setup as my shocks have died. ( previous owner had installed 35mm lift king springs with the Standard toyota shocks...yuck). Word around various suppliers is the tough dogg adjustables are a god bit of gear... (with EFS springs 2"lift?). The wife has back problems, therefore i'm trying to retain a soft as posible ride while still giving me some off-road ability and hadling all in one. Does anybody know if this set-up will do the trick or can suggest other options. Or am I fighting a losing battle?

Rough Dog shocks, wanna know why they got that nickname. Stick to EFS shocks with the EFS springs, they are tuned to work with each other, so you get a very compliant ride.
Any Shock where you can adjust the settings are pointless, how often are you going to get under your vehicle and turn the little knob, how many times is that little knob going to break off, how often is that little knob going to leak, I have seen all of these happen, I would stay away from any shock that is adjustable.

Hmmm, :? it seems to me to to be a subject of great debate this one. I had been told plenty of good stories about the tough dog gear, added to that several people have told me not to touch the efs gear but. I like to hear who has good experiences and who has bad. I welcome all feed back. I was also told the dobinsons gear would be a good choice. What to do... What to do...

Here is a good experience for you, In the comp scene, there were a few trucks using Tuff Dog shocks, one of them broke 2 shocks at the same time (on the rear), nobody else had any spare shocks of the same type, so he borrowed a pair of EFS shocks off of a mates rig, (now to cut a long story short), he now only uses EFS on his comp truck, and others have followed his foot steps as the EFS is miles ahead, Hardly any have had to change there shocks since as the EFS shock is a hell of alot stronger the the TD.

I have only heard bad stories about TD gear, and only a couple of stories where EFS has failed, but this was due to driver abuse (ie jumping a vehicle), however EFS still honoured there warranty. 3 years / 100000km.

            Hi Byrning,

My son has tough dog adjusables fitted to his Patrol which he treats very hard. (Jumps and very fast off road.)

He has broken the knobs off once, but has replaced them. Other than that they are working well for him.

            Thats just our experience.
