  • Fuel Pump, injector and glow plug servicing

    Howdy all,

Got a 2003 1KZ TD Prado with 160 000k's on it. Running nicely, timing belt has been done, servicing on schedule so no issues as yet (just hexed myself hey?! )

Anyway, you read things in magazines and half the time I am inclined to think it's just sponsors getting their marketing speal in. But I am all for spending a couple of hundred dollars on preventative maintainence instead of picking up the price of a massive tow or engine rebuild. So, a couple of questions for the collective here:

1/ How often, or would you even need to, consider getting the fuel pump and injectors serviced. (I try to run the Caltex Premium Diesel since it came available)

2/ Do glow plugs get brittle and risk breaking off and shagging the pistion/bore to hell? How long roughly should you be happy with one set before a change over is due?

3/ What are next weeks winning lotto numbers?

Over to you people. Thanks in advance.

Re: Fuel Pump, injector and glow plug servicing

    Hi Seamus

I currently have a 2005 prado with 105000kms and have just changed the glow plugs. I have previously had hiluxes with 2.8 & 3.0 diesels and can advise you my opinion and the reasoning to answer your question.
Re the glow plugs : my first hilux had a major issue caused by the glowplugs, a coupke burnt out at around 160000kms and the cosequence of this caused the actual wiring lume to overheat and caused a wiring burn out in the engine bay. The auto electrician said he felt that the wiring going into the fse box in the engine had not been seperated enough so when it heated up the plastic melted and the cables each side of the 80amp fuse joined instead of blowing the fuse.

After that $1200 experience i have always changed over the glowplugs every 100000 kms. They are about $40.00 each and a easy thing to replace. I suggeat you read the Toyota manual as they give a exact procedure of cleaning the hole with a 4mm & 6mm drill bit to specified depths as this enables correct reinstallation without stressing the plug and is highly recomended. On my current prado one glow plug was chipped on the ceramic end, so i believe it is something you should definately do at your mileage,

Re Injectors, My last hilux had 280000 kms and i had the injectors serviced when the fuel pump started leaking at about 220000, the diesel mechanic said that the injector spray and pattern needs to be checked and adjusted at about every 150000 max as they do get out of spec and can cause performance loss/ higher fuel use. I otherwise have never touched the fuel pump and think that unless you notice a performance drop of other issues i would leave it alone.

I am not a expert but these are my experiences.

Btw- have you had the valves adjusted? Regardless of what others say they go out of spec on these engines and are worth doing evety 50000km or so.

    Regards

    Jeff

Re: Fuel Pump, injector and glow plug servicing

the injector pump should checked (on vehicle) by deisel injection specialist about every 300000kms,
but don't be suprised if they say all is good.
injectors should be rebuilt/replaced every 150000kms.
the cracking pressure will drop over time and the spray pattern may not be spraying properly.
both of these lead to higher fuel usage and the potential to put a hole in the top of your piston.
as with glow plugs, i'd just check them every 50-100 thou using a ohm meter (setting on multimeter).
i found at 160000 on ours that #4 glow plug was open circuit (no reading on multimeter).
vehicle had been starting ok, maybe a fraction slower.
the tip was split and a little bit was missing.
they are only cheap and a good and easy DIY job.
just ensure you (or anyone) remove the link bar (joins all the plugs, proves the + volts) before measuring the resistance.
with it in place you will be reading them all and the best, but it wont show any faults (unless all have failed).

and the winning lotto numbers i can't divolge  if only i knew
