  • Fans coming on in hot weather

    G'day all

Got a quick question. I have an 05 VX T/D and have been having a few issues with it. It all started when i got the car, the temp guage ran very low and when i went up hills or boosted around the temp guage went up to half and the thermo and hub fans would come on. I eventually managed to track it down to an after market thermostat that was a different rating. I have changed it, and now the temp guage never moves from half.

Today being the first real hot day in Radelaide (36 degrees) i noticed that all the fans came on a few times whilst driving into town. Is this normal? I have a mate who has a new hilux and his fans have never come on, not even towing 2 tonne. I have heard that when the prado gets hot its too late they go bang.

The cooling system got flushed about 15k ago and had genuine toyota coolant put in which is still at the correct level.

    Any ideas would be appreciated

    Cheers

My only advice is if the gauge is not moving then its fine......

Are you sure that the fan setup is the same between the two cars? You may have an electric fan on the airconditioner radiator (front side of the radiators) that may be coming on....

    Cheers

Re: Fans coming on in hot weather

I am confused  Why wouldn't the fans come on, especially on a hot day? Mine guage sits on half regardless of the temp, and I have installed an after market engine monitor which tells more of the story. I generally run at about 75-80 degrees and on a hot day it may climb to 85 or even 90 for short periods going up big hills. My fans come on mostly on hot days so i would say it's normal.

Thanks for the reply guys and thanks for your info PradoBB. My previous 4wd was a bit different and i could never hear/feel the fans come on. It sounds like an aircraft is landing on the roof when the fans come on in my VX and becomes a bit sluggish (even with the chip).
I was probably getting a bit paranoid because they were coming on so often.

        Thanks for the info
