  • Adding a condenser fan to GXL

Got myself a CDS fan from a Grande (wreckers) and bolted it to the factory mounts.

As you can see it's plug and play from this end.

Now the tricky part, the relay has all the wiring fitted to the fuse box except the earth to activate the relay so for now I have used a normal 40A relay and wired in a earth. When I get time to remove the box assembly I will add the earth to it along with the right relay, new the relay is about $90 but a trip to the wreckers will sort that out for about $30.

Does it make a difference? Just got back from a trip up north and it was very cold in the cabin and the extra air flow to the condenser and radiator seem to help. Main reason for doing it was to help with cooling as there is the usual stuff we all bolt to bull bars reducing air flow.
    Cheers Nick.

I should have added that the fan cost $120 and the circuit is protected by the factory fuse 30 amp from memory but might be wrong.

Might look at a small Davies electric fan with a on/off switch for very hot days. Good idea.

Was going to do this but didn't like mounting a fan on the conderser, Chaffing ETC, or making brackets since there is a foctory fan that will bolt up and not create and problems down the track, but each to their own and good luck with it mate.

This is great - just what I was planning to do but didn't realise there was a factory one available. I'll be looking for one for sure. Do you know if all models will have the ability to plug and play with this as I have a GX ?

And if so, what exactly do I need - the fan (obviously) and the appropriate relay. Is this all?

Thats all thats needed, fan from a Grande and a relay. When I'm done with the mod which will allow the relay to work (OEM relay) there will be an update with pics posted in this thread. Bacically it involves removing the fuse box near the engine and installing a ground wire to allow the relay to work (well with my car anyway) My advice is to check for relay activation power where the relay lives (they are the small spade terminals, look at a simular relay located in the box) when the A/C is on. Then turn A/C off and make sure there is no power. The other terminals (large) are fan supply, 1 With power + the other to the fan. Hope that makes sense.

Think I'll do this as well. Heading to Alice Springs in January so I figure the aircon'll need all the help it can get!

I think you will find that they added this fan to all models with the D4D, mine has it as standard anyway (2009)

Was going to do the relay mod today but the rear diff locker problem had to be sorted and it was real hot, so it never got a look at. Being a hot day the A/C operated colder then ever before, just as a note there was never a problem with it and the compressor cycles frequently compared to before the fan Mod. Glad to hear that Toyo fitted the fan to later models (I feel like slapping them in the face with a dead fish for not doing mine $$$$$$$) but thats the wat the cookie crumbles I guess.
