  • PLEASE HELP DESPERATE ENGINE STUFF UP- now fixed thanks

 i AM DYING BESIDE MYSELF. Being clever and having adjusted valves numerous times on hiluxes i have owned i embarked to adjust my 120 series 1kz valves. all ok until i accidently dropped a feeler gauge in bounced and went straight down the hole next to no 4 valve down the engine with a clink and i cant see it. The hole is deep and i can see the bottom but no feeler gauge visible, The hole is about 40mm x 30mm. I am hoping and praying that this is a oil return and the gauge may be in the oil pan, which would be the best of a worse scenario.
there is one of these holes next to each valve set.

Please please anyone who has definate information and help.

    Thanks

      Oh man...

If the feeler gauge is magnetic, you may try using a telescopic magnet which is designed for removing tools etc from hard to reach places. It's a long shot but worth a try.
Failing this, I'd drain the oil and remove the pan in the hope that it has fallen into it.
The next course of action will mean that you must dismantle the engine to remove the tool.

Re: PLEASE HELP DESPERATE ENGINE STUFF UP

I have calmed down from 10/10 to 5/10 worried.
Looking down the hole with a torch on the right spot i can see a reflection on a surface that looks like oil. I think i am looking at the oil surface in the sump. My next stage is to drain the oil overnight and remove the sump in the next day or two, i hope to god that the feeler gauge is in there.

The hole is easilly 400-500mm deep and i dont think magnetic rod would do it, i would be worried about jambing it in the twisting hole and making more problems. But its worth a thought, i will go and re-evalute with this new idea.

I would love someone to confirm that these 3 holes do in fact go straight into the sump pan.

        does anyone know.???

Re: PLEASE HELP DESPERATE ENGINE STUFF UP

Starting to get concerned again, the sump under the engine is made of 2 parts, the lower is very small abot 300mm x 150mm and would be easy to remove, however i dont think that lines up to the hole above where the feeler gauge went in.
The rest of the lower pan is all heavy 3/8 cast iron that makes part of the bell housing and has heaps of bolts some that i cant even see, let alone consider removing. Also i dont know if this housingis something that is easy or should be removed.

I am going to try to get a magnetic telescope tomorrow, unless anyone has any ideas.

          Thanks

What about trying a gynecologist, A good one can wallpaper the house through the letter slot in the front door
Seriously though, it sounds like you're in a s**tload of bother.
Might be better off towing it to your nearest Toyota dealer and letting them have a look at it.

but i have this manual already , it does not help with my problem, would be good if they had diagrams on the lubrication system in the engine block etc.And had a idiot section that would be where i would be looking with my stuff up.

                  Thanks anyway

Re: PLEASE HELP DESPERATE ENGINE STUFF UP

I havent had a 1kz apart but I would guess that it would drop down into the sump. It may well land on the crank on its way down.

Without more specialist advice I would drop the current oil out of the sump, do the sump plug back up and just keep pouring it down the hole. Let it rush through so that it splashes and washes the little bugger to the bottom. Its OHC so there are no bearings on the way down to get stuck in other than a big end. But the chances of it slotting into the side of the cranks is pretty remote.

Drain the oil again and see if you can feel it in the hole and check if its come out with the oil. Put it in neutral and turn the motor slowly over by hand a half turn and repeat the flushing.

Drain again and see if its near the plug hole.

After all that I would just tell myself it has dropped into the sump where it is stuck in some nice diesel sludge and will live out its life happy ever after. Once down there its like barney in a brewery, he aint going anywhere.

                        (Thats me, an optomist )

Start her up and run for a minute then drain the oil and replace the filter and oil. (check for shiny bits of metal in the bottom of the oil pan, on the sump plug and cut the filter open and have a look in side)

Change the filter after a few days just to be sure and again have a look inside.

Just a quick thought on the telescopic magnet. You can purchase ones which have a flexible stem which might be better than the rigid type if the cavity is not straight. Toledo makes them. Also if you drain the oil you might be able to try the magnet from the sump end as well as the head of the engine. Hope you can get the wretched thing out.

Have you got access to some MIG wire or fencing wire? The easiest way to work out if you are looking at the sump is to put a wire down the hole, see if it comes up with 50mm of oil on it... Tie a big loop in the top end so it can't follow the feelers into the hole. You may even be able to fish the feelers out if there is anything to hook onto. I doubt that the gauges will do any harm left alone in the sump but that is a call you are going to have to make unfortunately. Good luck.

Re: PLEASE HELP DESPERATE ENGINE STUFF UP

                              Thanks for all the advice,

I tried a magnetic telescope (about 600 mm long) i could just get to the bottom of the hole and entered the oil about 30mm it then went over a ledge of some sort and dropped another few inches . Due to the small i had little manouverability, unfortunately then got it got stuck on the ledge coming up and wouldnt budge, luckilly after a few minutes of carefull jiggling it came out.

The problem is that the magnet wants to stick to everything and if you havent tried this before you would think its easy to do ( like I did) but in fact its quite difficult as i was warned from the friend i borrowed it from. the depth and small size hole doesnt help either.

So I had no luck with this method and am not keen on retrying it .

I have just dumped the oil and will remove the small lower tin sump tonite (as thats easy to remove) and i have my fingers crossed that i will have better luck locating the gauge this time.

If all this fails I dont know what I will do, a couple of people seem to think if left it probably will settle and not be a problem, but i dont know if thats a safe risk, its only a 0.25mm gauge but would it damage anything if it got caught up/ or could it block a oil outlet? Those are the risks.

                              Wish me luck thanks
