Re: Alternator Output
I know there is heaps on alternator output but today while I had mine at the auto elec to fix up a dealer stuff up [ see sovereign bull bar recall thread] I had him check mine and he said it was fine. He said that they charge very low and suggested that I drive with lights on as an increased in load makes it charge higher to top the battery up quicker on short trips. Any thoughts? Neil

Re: Alternator Output
This will in effect cause the charge rate to be higher as the extra load from the lights draws more current. As for charging the battery quicker, i personally haven't heard of that one, to the best of my knowledge it will still only charge at the same rate, in any case the difference would be so small it would not really be worth the effort.

Re: Alternator Output
The alternator is a 120A output according to the user manual. The output can be increased by 0.6V by installing a diode in series with the alternator sense pin. If that's not enough, 2 diodes will give a 1.2V increase.2019 GXL, Bullbar, UHF, Redarc Brake Controller, Tow Bar, Secondary Fuel Filter

Everything I have read seems to say it is an 80 amp unit.

Turning on the headlights only works on a couple of cars on which the alternator
output is controlled by the engine management system ie the Mazda BT50.
It will not work on non ECU controlled alternators which most vehicles have and will
actually decrease the charge rate, which can be proven simply by monitoring the
battery terminal voltage and turning on the headlight, you will see a drop of about .2V
You can make or buy a booster diode as described above to overcome the low charging voltage.

I rang around today it is seems now you can get an aftermarket 130AMP alternator upgrade for the Prado 120's.[B]Robert

They tell me it is a 130AMP Denso replacement unit and they were seeing a touch over 14 volts out of them.
My stock 120 D4D is doing around 13.2volts. With LeighW's voltage booster it is pretty constant at about 13.7-13.8 once fully warm.

Hey guys.
Went to start the beast yhis morning to find it wouldnt crank...
The multimeter was reading 10V on the crancking battery.
What we did find was the DVD player was turned on... Obviously by the kid.
After a jump start the input charge to the battery is 12.9V at idle & 13.4V when revvinf.
In my mind the altinator is ok but I was wondering if it actually should be charging at a higher rate?

If its the same as mine (still a 120 but D4D) that sounds normal they don't output alot of charge. I bought a this little fuse "diode" thing on ebay that replaces the alt fuse this bought the charge rate up to around 14 volts it was 30 bucks for memory.

No ive got the kzj with the 1kzte. But wow 14V charge?
Thats insane.
I think my problem is with the roof mounted DVD player that is wired into the same circuit as the interior lights.
Having constant power to it enables the kid to leave it on....
I think ill remove it... Seriously who watches DVDs these days anyway?HERS - KZJ120, BILSTIEN / KINGS, AMTS GEAR, RHINO GEAR, OUTBACK DRAWERS ETC ETC ETC
