  • P3 brake controller - Alternate location for installation

I wanted to install my P3 somewhere where it was easy to do, easily removable, inexpensive and easily accessible for driver and passenger but still leave me legroom etc. Initially I was going to follow other examples and place it in the ashtray area, but thought I would rather keep that as it is.

So I have installed it by fixing it to the square blanking plate on the LHS of the steering wheel. That way I just unplug the P3 from the cable connection and put it in its stoarage bag it comes with, then put the cables up under the dash or over behind the cover panel to the left of the drivers footrest until they are needed next, and remove the P3 cradle and blanking plate assembly all as one piece and then install a new blanking piece that can be bought for around $10 from Mr Toyota. I thought this was cheaper than buying another ashtray, and also easier to fit and remove each time I wanted to use it. It still leaves me plenty of legroom as one of the photos shows.

I was concerned that the weight of the P3 etc would pull the blanking plate and cradle out of the dash, but it is a really tight fit and so far my driving with it fitted has shown that it doesnt move at all. Even if it does in the future I could install a backing piece behind the blanking plate with the bolts that hold the P3 small bracket to it (i left these 2 bolts longer just in case i need them later on but i think they could have been shorter bolts with no worries)

All going well here are some photos. Excuse some with the eerie blue tones, not sure what that was, maybe to do with the light coming through the sunroof glass:

That's a really convenient location. I mounted my uhf mic the same way as you've done your brake controller.

wish there were a few more convenient locations to use like this

i have used this a few times now and it has proven to be great, no hiccups at all. ahh unless you call forgetting to put it back in when we left the van park at xmas a hiccup, oops lucky i realised just as we were driving up the road outside the van park. just another connection i got to check b4 leaving

looking at the first or last photo, does anyone know what the little grille section behind where my brake controller goes is for ?

I seem to recall a thread a few years ago that placed the controller in the ash tray in the centre console. My solution was to wrap a piece of boot seal around the P3 and wedge it into the opening for the ash tray. It fits really snugly and I have had no issues braking with the Tvan over the past 12 months. This solution allows me to remove the P3 when it is not needed and replace the ash tray

Put mine in the glove box, up the top in the book tray. Once adjusted never need to touch again. Will post pic soon.
