  • Car smells of gas!!!

    Hi Guys,

One of the boys a work is having issue where his Prado stinks of gas! When he pulls up at work you get a big whiff of what smells to me like natural gas. Apparently you can also smell it in the cabin (but not when aircon is on recirculate). It is more noticable when accelerating, braking and turning corners. He took it Toyota and they reckon there is nothing wrong with it.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Steve..

I hope he/she doesn,t smoke  I would definately have that trucks gas system and storage tank checked for leaks ASAP. by a mechanic who specialises in Gas systems. If it was a Toyota dealership that had the system installed by a second party, I would insist STRONGLY that a qualified service person from Toyota take a ride with the owner and get a wiff so to speak. That is an accident waiting to happen.

      Clifton,

It's not on gas at all!!!! It is a D4D like yours & mine!!! It smells exactly like when the gas hotplates at home fail to ignite.

Where does he fill up ?
He may like to try changing to another fuel supplier - do you have a BP ?
          Cheers, Wayne

My mate dragged the service manager into the car and took him for a spin. Service manger could smell it, mumbled something about Catalytic Convertors and Corola's but offered no fix. Do diesels have catalytic convertors? Fortunately for my mate the smell is slowly starting to be less and less. He thinks that it may have been a dodgey tank of fuel. The smell started after refilling and his fuel economy went 16lt and didn't move for the whole tank - it was purchased from a Shell Servo so I don't think bio diesel is the cause. I have heard about diesel tanks growing bacteria/fungus could this be the cause of the gas smell? How would he go about cleaning his tank out if so?

I know batteries produce sulphur when they're overheating/on the way out! Maybe get the battery checked? The last thing you want is the battery to go pop.
