  • My Playdo's not happy

hey everyone hopefully someone can offer some assistance. the car itself, it has: 150000km on the clock(just serviced), manual, 275 65 tyres, arb steel bull bar, dual batteries etc. (nothing else of significant weight)

    now the problems:
the malfunction light comes on randomly mostly when going around round abouts (there appears to be no power loss or any other conditions)
occasionaly when changing gears it revs up to 2500rpm approx (service department told me it was the clutch!!! dont see hows that's possible as i havent been experiencing any slippage)

    any insight would be great
    thanx in advance

First thing I would do is check the fault codes. If you dont have anything that can read the ODBII interface like a scanguage you''re probably best to take it down to Toyota so they can connect it up to their machine - They can tell you what the reason for the malfunction is by checking the codes.

    What year is it?

        Can you be more specific?

ie. Does it rev up with your foot on the clutch, or with it off, after the gearchange?

Bad clutches surprisingly can go on and on and only pose a problem when subjected to stress such as turning or climbing hills in high gears. Also, they can cause a flare in the revs with the slightest touch of the clutch pedal because the friction material is worn. You can quickly eliminate a bad clutch from the equation by taking the following steps:

          1. Warm the engine up thoroughly.
          2. Find a quiet street and whilst the car is stationary, place the transmission in 3rd gear.
          3. Using moderate revs, attempt to take off. If the car stalls very quickly your clutch is okay. If the car takes off slowly and the revs tend to hold, then the clutch is bad.

You can follow up this test by deliberately selecting a higher gear on a steep incline and flooring the pedal - any problems will surface under these basic tests and will at least help you to further investigate what the problem may be.

Next up I'd be looking at the various sensors on the car that feedback into the computer. This appears to be more likely since you are getting a fault code. The Throttle Position sensor would be high up on the list here. If you've got a multimeter you might be able to check its specs to see if it is bad.

Here is a nice basic test you can do, chock the wheels (safety Sam here) and get someone in the drivers seat. Start the engine and idle, while keeping your hands away from rotating components give the wiring a little wiggle, try different areas working your way around the engine bay, get the person in drivers seat to keep an eye on the check light. As said before, good chance to be the TPS, but wiring is a good start, and its free.

            Good luck.

              Re: My Playdo's not happy

so the latest update is, i took it to another mechanic had a diagnostic done on it and there was nothing :x :x :x yet the same problems continue, except the malfunction light more consistent.

so my mechanic thinks: that it is the diesel that im using (woolworth diesel caltex) so i ran my tank down and filled it with Shell??? The other is a buildup of dust etc. on my O2 sensor??

ive personally done the above clutch test and all appear to be fine...

Any suggestions would be fantastic as to sollution as its driving me crazy. its getting to a point where i dont want to go off the beaten track

              Thanks again

                Re: My Playdo's not happy

                Engine revs rising

A clutch can do this if it is worn, has oil on the linings, has a faulty throw out lever or bearing or the pressure plate has a broken finger or spring that has reduced its tension somewhat. The reason it does this you have an increase in load as you go up each gear. A good test to check is to find a decent hill and go up it in a too high a gear and as it lugs hold it flat. If its on its way out then it will slip.

As a mechanic I would suggest pulling the gearbox and renewing as is required.

If it were my car I would just go with the flow until it slips more or I was about to head across the simpson.

Your malfunction light is probably a wire rubbing somewhere.

                Good luck.
