  • VAN LIGHTS HAVE STOPPED WORKING

    Hi guys,

All my tail lights have stopped working on the van, just wondering if there is a fuse for all the lights or maybe a common earth that could have gone.

The bulbs ar ok and the lights on the vehicle are ok. The brakes work ok.

    Any ideas.

    Regards
    Geoff

First thing to check would be your wires inside your 7 pin plugs you use to connect your van to the car you may have a loose or broken wire inside one of the plugs

There is also a relay under the bonnet in the black box near the battery. I would also check the 7 pin harness connection which is located behind the panel in the boot, same side as the jack. But as quicky said, check the harness for power first.

Re: VAN LIGHTS HAVE STOPPED WORKING

Having just reconditioned my trailer lighting I can say the problem is most likely to be in your car - trailer plug socket connection. This is the area most prone to damage.

I'd advise anyone trying to chase electrical problems to learn to drive a multimeter ( just one of those $15 digital ones from Super Cheap is more than adequate )

When you say "all your taillights" do you just mean tail lights or Brakes, indicators as well ?
Cuase this makes a big difference in the fault finding.
with the van disconnected, turn on your taillights and check for 12V at the 7 pin socket. ( ie the car end )
If yours is wired the standard way, tail lights +12v should be on pin 7 and earth is pin 3.
you can get all the pinouts by just googling "trailer wiring australia" or similar.
Anyway, if there's 12V appearing there, then the problem is in your van. Maybe take the plug at the van end apart and check the wires inside the plug haven't broken or come loose ( I found this had happened on mine when it had been stressed at some point. ).

if all your lights have gone, sounds like you've lost your "earth" connection ie pin 3 ( actually "earth" is a bit of a misnomer when it comes to vehicle wiring because at no time does it contact "earth".)
        Cheers, Wayne

Is that the small balck box tagged onto the end of the fuse box closest to engine? Just curious for future reference.

Also just wondering if you know what the small silver part is that is fitted next to the rear side on the long side of fuse box? It has an earth wire running of it. I was thinking of relocating this for space there depending on what it is and depending on where i put my 2nd battery. Thanks

On my last 90 series I had continuous problems and each time it looked like an earthing problem. After others had failed to fix it, I decided to rewire it and then noticed that the original auto elec had cut off and left a live wire in the 7 pin connector on the car when he wired in a "hot wire". Problem was solved after i taped that up. Maybe its worth a look for any extra cut off cables in there and just testing if they have power either with vehicle on or off in case it is shorting out like mine was. Maybe you had a lazy auto elec like i did - cheers

Re: VAN LIGHTS HAVE STOPPED WORKING

            Thanks a lot guys,

I have a day off tomorrow to look at it so I'll let you know what the problem is.

            Hopefully without too much swearing.

            Regards

Re: VAN LIGHTS HAVE STOPPED WORKING

You probably have LED lights so this may not apply. I replaced my side markers and clearance lights on my Goldstream with LED the other day and noted the 12V supply was daisy chained from each light. You might have a problem with one light that is causing them all to not work.

                Hi Guys,

Thanks for your help on this one. In the end the Auto Electrician found that a relay in the back quarter panel did not have power to it.

                All good now.

                Regards

Re: VAN LIGHTS HAVE STOPPED WORKING

                  Good News,

I found one blown fuse but still had to take it to the sparky who found a relay in the rear quarter panel which was not getting power so he connected a positive wire to it and everything works.

                  Regards
                  Geoff
