  • Lift without the wife noticing......

Just registered to the site after browsing it for some time and have decided to give my wifes Prado a few mods......

    Car is a 1999 V6 GXL Auto

I am attacking the tyres first and have it in today getting a set of Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armours put on to replace the Dualer 694's. I am going 265/75/16 which should give it about a 1"lift over the tyres it had on which were worn.

I would like to do a slight lift on it and wondering what is the smallest lift you can do? Its my wifes car and I must be fair, my 4Runner runs a 4"lift and 33's so I have my toy! This car is used for family duties and tows our camper trailer. It is std at the moment but I am about to fit LPG as well as a bull bar and the dual battery system I have had in my shed for about 6months.....

I want to do springs and shocks and I am looking at Suspension Stuffs in Brissy's own shocks as they seem like a great price and then Dobinson coils front and rear. Any one used their shocks before, I believe they are made by Lovells??

Why don't you just tell the wife that these extra "safety features" you are fitting, will weigh the car down too much, with the added weight of the camper trailer as well,
the suspension needs upgrading to cope with it.

Sorry but I have to ask, If you are looking at a "minimum" lift ... why lift at all? You may as well go for the standard 2" kit when you get the tyres done and tell here it only feels lifted because of the new shoes :P

Mate I like the way you think...lol I just talked to her about putting it on gas and explained the benifit that the snorkle will make and she seems to agree with that excuse

Got the car back from putting the tyres on, what a difference they are great. Only problam is that now the spare wheel cover doesnt fit with the bigger tyres....I guess that will end up on evilbay

After asking the same question a few times "äre the shockies stuffed?" (Took a few goes for them to cotton on)I finally got my answer, well the one I wanted to hear anyway that I need new shocks. Will have to do a bit more research to see what is a good combo without breaking the bank.

I have been thinking of putting a 1UZ in the 4Runner but now thinking of putting it in the Prado and the 3.4 in the 4Runner, Perfect!

Shame she will see the car when I get home..... Maybe that will work with the gas tank fitment....

I only want to do a minimal lift so she is comfortable with it, after all it is her car. I do however want to be able to still use it as a 4b when we go camping, we wont all fit in the 4Runner and it wont tow the camper, too gutless...3.0 slow. If I could find a lift of say 1 - 1/12 inch it would be perfect, might have to have a chat to Kings Springs

I got my stuff through suspension stuff and i think that it was lovell's.

            No complaints from me.

I wouldn't waste time hunting for a 1.5 inch lift when the common 2" lifts aren't really a full 2" anyway.

For this case, I'd recommend a 2" lift in medium duty (to keep the ride comfortable), and stick to the original tire size of 265/70R16 (to prevent sloppy cornering and steering).

Or, if you're dead set on bigger tires... have you considered coil spacers?

Hi mate thanks for that. Tyres were done yesterday so too late to turn back there. Are coil spacers legal at all in QLD? They could be an option worth looking at.

Dont forget that if you get LPG fitted, the tank sits one to two inches lower than the old petrol tank, and yes it will ground the first time you go off road. 2" inch lift gives some piece of mind.
                  Cheers

Sorry, the only thing I know about QLD rules is the 2" lift limit. That's gotta suck!

Brett....my man...I think you have given me the ultimate excuse to put the lift kit in..... If we have 3 kids in the car the last thing we need is the the tank scraping, its a safety issue!!

Glen my 4Runner has a 2" suspension lift and a 2" body lift. The suspension lift is easy but the body lift has to be approved by QLD Transport, I have the form saying I can install it but need to take it over the pits. It has 33's on it so need to borrow a set of wheels or I think they will just have a chuckle and tell me to come back later......

You would think all states would be the same, I guess if you dont live in QLD you will need to be compansated somehow...

I agree that the tank is a common clearance issue. I've already pulled the guard off once in order to straighten out a couple dings - I'd hate to lose 2 inches there.
