  • Small amount of coolant escaping from radiator overflow

I have noticed a small amount of coolant escaping from behind the rubber cap that is fitted to the short overflow pipe in the plastic coolant tank filler neck (just below the cap). The coolant runs around the lip of the tank and eventually drips down on the fan and is flung around on to various pipes nearby. I must stress that there is a VERY small amount escaping from time to time and is not noticeably affecting the level in the tank at all. I assume this is normal and just a bad design due to the fact that there is no rubber pipe fitted to the overflow just the rubber cap.

    Thoughts anyone?

My 120 does this as well. Never had an issue with it.

Thanks, sounds like this is normal then and nothing to worry about as I suspected.

I've noticed this is every 150 so far (including mine) and its not a problem, just that the cooling system is overfull from factory

Well I had the dealer look at this problem and they stated that it was not an overfill issue and they odered a new tank and cap. The tank was installed this week and so far no more leaks.

Now wondering whether this is a component problem on some earlier builds.

I have noticed this on mine as well and was going to raise this at the 6 month service due next month. Didnt see it as a much of an issue and good to see others arent to concerned either.

At the end of the day I didn't like any sort of leak as it may get worse and to be frank it really should not do it.

My 150 did not leak coolant for the first 6 months. Now 9 months old all you can see under the bonnet is pink coolant. The tank is not over fill so i am off to Toyota tomorrow to get it sorted

Had the same leek on mine at 700 kilometers. The coolant level had increased well above the hot full line. It was as though the coolant was expanding into the top tank, as it should but not going back into the radiator when the engine cooled. Perhaps it was sucking air somewhere. I took it back to the dealer. They checked and bled the system and said that they could not find a problem. It’s a bit worrying ether air or something else had to be displacing the coolant.

Mine was about 20mm above full from new with the leak. Since top tank replacement all is still good even though the level is still 20mm above full, get it changed out.

That's very interesting to read so many people having the same problem. Mine did it from very early in it's life, some times I can even smell it when I pull into the garage. I recently had the 10000 km service and I noticed the pink stain wasn't there anymore and oddly enough the smell isn't either. I'll have to have a better look, maybe they replaced it at the service....

Mine did not leak all the time....no explanation.... but still all good since replacement.

I also have problems with coolant being pushed out of the overflow tank but not getting sucked back in.
I've had the head off and pressure tested and all ok. New head gasket and new pre-combustion chambers inserted (old ones weren't too bad but replaced them anyway to play safe), new radiator, new thermostat, new viscous fan.
The turbo just died and I'm fitting a new one tomorrow.
My mechanic wonders if the turbo might have a crack in the housing that allows exhaust gas to push into the coolant system (anyone heard of this?).
Otherwise I'm looking for any other components that could allow exhaust or other gasses to bleed into the coolant system. Any ideas?
Someone said to check if the EGR vale is water cooled but I don't have the car with me right now so can't check. Anybody know if the EGR has a water cooling pipe through it?
                            Many thanks,

Wow luke that's unbelievable......how many km's on the clock?

Forunately my issue was resolved with the simple replacement of the overflow tank and cap.
