  • Rattle but not injectors

OK, D4D 2007 (injectors replaced) 117000km. As the topic suggests I have a horrible rattle clicking noise on start up each day, hot or cold. It lasts anything from 10 seconds to 10km at all revs. It sounds like it is coming from the pulley area but turning the A/C on or off doesn't affect it.

I tried a search but keep coming up with the injector issue. Has anyone had trouble with pulley bearings? I thought they would whine rather than rattle?

I have factory extended warranty but being in a rural area I need the info before I ring the dealer and make the trip in...where it won't occur as the car has travelled more than 10kms.

    Any advice appreciated.

What was down to replace the injectors? Could there be a bracket or similar not tightened.

Nah, that happened already resulting in a cracked injector line and diesel pouring out everywhere while on holidays....

Sounds like someone droping marbles on concrete constantly...

      Any other ideas?

My old crummydoor did an fan belt idler pully bearing... sounded like a crackety crack crack crack sound. Might be something to look at?

That would be my guess as well. Oh well guessing I'll have to drop it off for a look then drop it off to be fixed. Any ideas if it would be under warranty?

Odd that the noise goes away if it is a bearing in an idler. I can't check at the moment but do our D4D's have a viscous clutch fan? Could be the bearing in the fan rattling until it runs up to engine speed. Anyway you should be able to feel a crunchy bearing with the engine OFF and keys OUT. Sounds more like a sympathetic rattle until the engine settles down from cold, like a loose bracket or mount. I'd be pushing and pulling everything I could reach under the engine. As for warranty it SHOULD be covered unless you did something specifically that caused the problem (like loosened off a bracket to fit a 2nd battery and then forgot to do it back up again).

Tried wiggling and spinning the fan but no apparent noises. The idler pulley does have a little play in it though. I'm getting it checked out next week.

              Thanks for the suggestions.

                Tez,

Did you ever sort this out?

My D4D (56000k) has developed a similar noise to the one you described - like dropping marbles on concrete. Only happens on a cold start up and is in synch with the engine rpm. Started a week or so ago with just a couple of ticks but now is very, very evident, rev the engine and the ticks follow suit. Curious thing is that it goes away after about a minute, almost as if something comes up to temperature or whatever. Another way to describe the noise is the way our hot water pipes creak in the house as you first turn them on, you get a creak as the copper expands a little as the hot water arrives.

Doesn't seem to be "major" in that I've not noticed any real drop in performance or whatever, but with the rain I haven't had a chance to push the car hard or anything to test it.

                Cheers,

                Dave

                  Re: Rattle but not injectors

We went on a 6000k wander this winter, starting at Halls Gap where it was just short of snowing. Through most of the trip it was very cold in the mornings, and the '07 D4D developed a noise for the first 5 mins, a bit between the dropping marble sound (above thread) and a buzzing noise. I poked about around the pulleys where it sounded closest, couldn't find anything. Back in Adelaide, summer, no sound. Will get it checked next service, let you know.
