  • Oil Change - Very basic question

    Hi all,

Tomorrow is a very exciting day in TT land.

I am about to do my first oil change......how exciting

Here is my basic, some may say stupid, question.

The oil filter is upside down on the side of the engine. That is, the filters hole is pointing down.

When I unscrew it, where does all the oil go?

Please, its not like an old pommie truck is it.......a mess on the ground

You'll notice a small dish around the base of the filter. There is a tube that goes from here down to where the sump plug access plate is in the bash plate. The oil will drip into your drain pan when you undo the filter.

      Mr Toyota San,

I am sorry I doubted you.

The oil will drain into the container that you dump the oil into but if the tube is dirty or you let a lot of oil run through it the tube will dribble oil for a while. Possibly for longer than you leave the oil tray under the car. Best bet is to unscrew the filter and remove it asap. Unscrew until the filter reaches the end of the thread and then roll it upright as you lift it off. Hard to describe but you will work it out.

So, what was the verdict of the oil change, TT?

A big splot on the driveway or a smiley face?

Re: Oil Change - Very basic question

Due for my first DIY oil change on my 1KZ-TE.

My research (on this forum) has brought me to:
            • Replace the crank oil with Caltex DELO 400[/*:2659g4lb]
            • Order OEM Filter from Toyota - Does anyone know the part number (1KZ-TE 2003 - so it's the "big" filter and not the smaller one used on D4D)?[/*:2659g4lb]

Another potentially "dumb" question, but I just need some confirmation. I was taught that any oil change that was done via a sump drain plug should have the washer for the plug replaced. Right? (Is there a part no? local Toyota supplier should be able to provide?)

            Thanks all!

Won't comment on your choice of oil or the filter number because I don't know but definately change the sump plug gasket each time. Toyota uses a composite nylon gasket that should only be one use. Yes you can get away with using them more than once but the gaskets are only worth a couple of $ so grab several at a time. Don't over tighten the sump plug - if it goes 'click' then replace the gasket with a new one. When I sold my 90 privately the guy was a bit dubious that I did the 5,000km oil changes until I handed him a packet of 4 or 5 new gaskets in a ziploc bag that had my oily finger prints on it! I also had a spare sump plug but cannot for the life of me now remember why.

Make sure your oil catching container has a capacity that will take all the oil.... ops: It will drop something like 7 litres.
